Which of these old 30 footers goes to windward best and in most comfort?

She 31 as the best all-rounder.

Don't they have "very Sixties" accomodation, with a dinette/double and galley down t'other side, though?

No - or at least the example used in the Yachtsnet archive I linked to above doesn't. Yachtsnet do usually say if their archive examples differ from the norm, or if there were a number of alternative layouts.

Here: http://www.yachtsnet.co.uk/archives/she-31/she-31.htm

I can't say I'm very keen on the layout around the companionway, though, with those very open quarter berths and no proper chart table.

Thank you; that was another that I had overlooked. I see there are a couple of Excaliburs locally so I shall look out for them.

I am un-keen on the spade rudder in a cruiser, as I associate it with twitchiness and possible vulnerability, but evidently it does not concern you as you have had your boat for quite a while!

Well, it did concern us when our rudder fell off inthe Irish Sea! Story here:

http://phaon.dnsdojo.net/avaprep.htm

on the other hand she is not at all twitchy (the long fin helps), is well-balanced and light on the helm, and very manoeuvrable.

To be fair, I don't think any of the other Excaliburs have had the same problem - but it's something you should get checked if you do think of getting one.

Minn if you are coming from wood, why not 'go for it' and get something beamier, but with the all-weather solidity that you are used to..36 ft gets you momentum and space. And as Holman and Pye have been mentioned, an older R36 like mine are not that expensive, and dead easy to fiddle with cosmetically if they look a bit tired down below-old headlinings look really naff when sagging and bring the price down many 1000s.But the fibreglass underneath, ha!
Many of em have actually done v little hard sailing, but they stand up to it anyway well enough..
You will love the beam and comfort inside, the space on deck, ease of motion and handling at sea, wooden boat like proportions externally.. Not that I am biased hey ho.. But I grew up on wood too, my first own boat was a Fife design n all..go on, have a look. Cheaper-way cheaper- than a still depreciating 10-yr old BenJenBav...

I've got a Hustler 30... very similar to the She 31. Points very well and is very nippy. Several on Apolloduck at the mo... White-hulled one in Tollesbury is particularly well-sorted. We saw her after buying ours and she was very well presented.
