Which new engine should I have?

Re: Ehh

not sure what the engine is like on a boat bit the D3 in the volvo S60 is a belter, I had one for a while and I was well impressed, much much quieter than any volvo diesel I ever driven before, good on fuel and torque by the bucket load, I would imagine it would make your boat go like stink! Oh yeh and for a diesel it makes a pretty cool noise with very little smoke.

Engine prices

A 4.3GL is about £7k excl VAT, the D3-160 due to be launched in October will be about £12k excl VAT, so what is the panels view, is £5k extra worth it? Apparently the engines will be quite rare at first so I will have to get my skates on if I want to get one ordered.

Re: Engine prices

look at it as a loan with the fuel cost differentials as the interest on the basis that you will get the extra back on resale.
100 hrs a year - 5 gal / hr petrol 3 gal / hr diesel gives 2500 pa v 500 pa so you save 2000 pa against interest on 5000k - all rough and ready but it would be a no brainer for me.......added to which you will be one of the few with a D3 (and able to talk about it on the forum!)

Possible problem with D3

I am awaiting Glastrons response to my request for a D3. It seems that they would want to test any new engine in the boat it was to be put in as it may go too fast /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif 1 uill have to wait to see if mine could be a possible prototype. lt would be nice to have an unusual addition to my boat.

this is pie in sky innit?

I'd be happy to be proved wrong but I'd be amazed if Glastron would do anything bespoke. Like ordering a mondeo and asking the dealer to organise for ford to supply it with a ferrari engine or something. It's not just the cost of the engine, they will have to muck about with engine bearers, different fuel systems, loads of stuff. Then the product liability folks will have to sign off, and bla bla. They make production boats not bespoke, so surely they'll say can't be bothered......

Cheaper to sell your current 'gine (or keep as back up.... no, only kidding) and fit the new diesel locally, and stuff the warranty. you also wont suffer the depreciation hit on your current boat this way

Re: this is pie in sky innit?

I can't see a straight 5 fitting in the space of a V6 length wise. Having looked in the engine conpartment of the Glastron, with the V6 installed, I'd say that the bulkhead/seat would need re arranging. The engine box would need to be bigger and the floor may also need altering.

Happy .. whit are ye doing man, and why? If you're going to get a new boat get a bigger and better one rather than the same one with a different engine .. I can see you in one of them Trader things .. room on the back for a fast RIB.

Size isn't everything, I love my little boat, I can be here there and everywhere at the drop of a hitch /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif What is the point of having a great big boat stuck in Chatham that needs crew? I am new to boating so I am still enjoying getting the different experiences with the odd trailering about, that I would never get with a 34ft boat, or should I say so quickly /forums/images/icons/wink.gif I just need boat trailer and roof rack really then I would be OK. I will get the new one, it will save having to re-anti foul the present one which is now getting on a bit and 6 months old, so by March would need re-done. I will also upgrade the engine to either the 4.3EFi or the D3 (if it is allowed) as that will save servicing costs on the present one. See there is method in it really, it just takes a bit of working out /forums/images/icons/wink.gif I will take my time over the next year to really decide what I need, even experienced boaters can't decide between a flybridge and a sportscruiser so what hope do I have at the moment? I don't want to make a £150k mistake thank you very much /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Ach yer a fly yin! Ah think Ah'll buy a new boat every year tae save on ra antifouling, servicing and standing oan ra hard. Guid thinkin batman!

<hr width=100% size=1>

Cost of antifouling £100s, servicing again £100s, cost of the VAT you lose instantly when you buy a new boat = £1000s plus the depreciation on the old boat when you trade in.

It dont add up, its a dumb move.

I'm glad you see sense as well, do people realise the work and mess involved in anti-fouling, getting palputations over the mechanics and their annual service bill, plus having to fully valet the boat for the next season, much better just to change them as I do with my cars. I will keep some of the instruments, but I guess the flares are no good after a year as their life is shorter, I don't know about the gas in the life jackets but I will get it all checked out and replaced as necessary. The local Chandlery can be trusted to go to the marina, check out the boat and replace what they feel needs replaced, after all I have given them quite a bit of business.

I suppose on the basis of your logic, I ought to sell the Rolls because the ashtrays are full and it needs a service /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
And I hope you've factored into your equations all the heart-ache and anguish involved in sorting out the gremlins that inevitably come with a new boat. I assume your present boat is largely problem-free by now.
Good luck anyway.

Re: new boat

It is rare that someone has a new boat - but that the only difference is a more powerful/ lighter engine. I wd've though that a slightly larger boat would make more difference for boating fun? Or are you hooked on the ability to tow it about?

Re: new boat

I fink Happy would be better with no engine at all and leave more room for storage space.../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I think you have missed the point, my boat is a cheapo, pennies, almost disposable, in the eyes of some who have the lovely big ones. That is where you don't really need to worry, you can't lose more than £24k ish, that is the monthly installment on some big ones /forums/images/icons/wink.gif So say your budget is £150k, you have to work out what you want to do with it, a new small boat every year without the need for all the nasty anti-fouling or a big boat you are stuck with, that you perhaps wish you hadn't bought. I will keep small until I feel I have done the exploring I wanted to, got more experience, chosen my home berth and the ideal big boat within the budget I have left at the time.

Sounds OK, but I guess things do change e.g. I could really do with a bigger boat now, but I have to stick to my new plan or I am sure I will get it wrong. When the boating budget goes I'm not putting any more into boats as I have too many other expensive hobbies to juggle with, plus we like our holidays, so time is a factor as well.

Re: new boat

I understand that some of the reasons may be sub rosa or even sub judice at the moment, but it is to be straight swap for a new hull...
