Which new engine for a Westerly Pentland?

Just going through installing Yanmar 3YM30 in Pentland replacing MD17C.

Engine should be going in over the weekend. The Yanmar was more expensive than the BETA. The major consideration for me was that the equivalent BETA was recently modded down on Torque and HP (BETA 28 makes 25HP IIRC) due to new emissions regs. Mind you, the BETA would have been adequate but I went with the 'you can never have too much power' train of thought. Also as I own the boat with my father we half the cost of everything so the difference did not seem all that much.

Yanmar required new prop and shaft and lengthened exhaust hose but *Should be pretty straight forward*

My father has done a load of drawings and made a mock up to ensure we get a first time fit and the bearers are correctly sized.... If you go the Yanmar route happy to share these.

When I replaced my MD1 with a Beta I got a coupe of major benefits I was not expecting. I needed a new prop because of reverse rotation and much higher revs. The new prop was smaller and has only 2 blades. This has given me a much better sailing performance due to less drag.
The other thing was the great reduction in weight which also helps when sailing
It is worth checking up the engines you choose will give similar benefits
cheers

You can overcome the problem of prop rotation with a hydraulic box. When I re engined my boat it was imperative that I kept the LH prop (offset shaft and P bracket).

Plus I had very little fore and aft space, so it had to be a three cylinder 30hp lump. Both the Nanni and the Beta extract the hp with revs, the Yanmar was too big and very expensive.

My solution was a Mitsubishi based 31hp Westerbeke coupled to a PRM 150 box.

Don't forget to allow for a whole new fuel and exhaust system!
