I ask because there appear to be two different models sharing the same name.

This is the one shown on the Musto website at £450 - http://www.musto.com/sailing-clothing/mpx/mpx-offshore-jacket-platinum141626.html;

Whereas, this one comes in at as much as £200 less from other sources including eBay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Musto-MPX...ual-New-/141389336196?_trksid=p2054897.l4275;

Does anyone know what the differences are?

I have a pair of Musto MPX overtrousers which I have been very pleased with, and feel that the MPX Offshore jacket should be a good replacement for my present GUL jacket which is absorbing water these days. I've also been pleased with Musto customer service; I'd sent them my original MPX breeks to repair a tear (my fault), but they noticed some minor delamination and, unasked, replaced them with a new pair under their ten year guarantee.

I'd be amazed if anyone ever paid £450 for an MPX jacket. They are always on sale, and there are always last season jackets available. The RRP is there to make them look the premium brand. Gore-Tex doesn't go off so buy the one from last year unless there is some clear advantage in the new one. A good example of this was when they changed the shape of the mouth/nose guard since the old one was just a flat flap, maybe not worth an extra £200 but certainly worth waiting for the new one to come down in the sales.

I've gone for the cheaper one. My main concerns were about the materials which appear to be identical, and the Musto MPX 10 year guarantee which the seller says is included, so looks like a reasonable buy.

The collar on option one looks to be a lot larger and comparable to the design of the HPX jackets.

I've got last year's model. The collar works fine; any higher I'd need a longer neck. With the collar up, wrap around nose/mouth piece in place and hood up, you can get to the point where you have only the few millimetres need to see though left uncovered.

Not looked in detail but one may be the full MPX or HPX offshore/ocean jacked while the other may be more of a light-weight MPX/HPX race jacket with a lower collar, less pockets, etc. I have both (a few seasons old now) and the light-weight race jacked get's much more use with the full offshore one coming out when it gets nasty and there is a decent chance of getting a wave down my neck.

The colour is irrelevant, the pics were just there to show the two items. The gray/platinum makes the detail clear.

As it happens, I disagree with you. I have two jackets that colour, neither of which look grubby - a lined Gill jacket for cold weather sailing that i've had for at least 12 years or so. and the slightly newer Gul jacket. They are normally washed at the end of each season although the Gill hasn't been used at all for two years. It's not a problem in my view.

Can goretex jackets be washed then? I have a red HPX which is getting a bit grubby in places.

If you take care of it and keep in touch with Musto then you have a good chance of getting that 10 year lifetime warranty. If you use it at Sunsail and dont care for it. Effectively killing the jacket through poor care then you wont be getting a 10 year warranty. Like a car if you ride the clutch, its not covered under warranty neither is trampling with gritty samdy shoes on your jacket in the floor of a RIB during a summer season.

It is usually 'life of the product' if tho it is cared for then you have a great chance of claiming if it fails (unlikely to fail). Ive had a Musto MPX for 8 years, it is now my rain coat for walking. I treat it with Grangers spray waterproofing and it works very well (like a waxed car in the rain)

I now have the Helly Hansen Ocean drysuit with Gill midlayer and Northface thermoball technology. For those days where the rain is heavy but its shorts weather i have the Helly Hansen Offshore jacket.

Your purchase of the Musto MPX jacket is an excellent choice, you will be very happy with it. Mine is Red. Give it a Grangers treatment at Christmas if you use it alot.

On motorcycle Gortex jackets the first thing to do if they leak is wash them!!

Thought it was bull sh 1t at first but it works!! Small dirt particles block the breathing ability and washing (not biological powder) cleans the Gortex and refreshes the minute fabric pores etc so it works again as originally designed - or so I was told - but it works!

M/C shops sell special washing fluid and another that you sponge on after washing but still damp.

For bet results for the waterproofing out in the dryer in a hot room the former with an 'activating' type of fall bouncing around works well

Can and should. And tumble-dried. When people complain of goretex and similar fabrics leaking they are often clogged up with salt and dirt and washing sorts them out. Gentle tumble drying revitalises the beading which is part of their modus operandi.
