Which MiFi Router?

I've heard that some MiFi routers only work on 3G. We're often in areas with low signal strength so get Edge / GPRS signals.
Can anyone recommend a MIFi Router that works on both 3G & low signal strengths?

Thanks,
John

Broadband on the yacht

Hi John,

I have a Tplink 3G wireless router that I plug a 3 mobile Huawei E353 dongle into. 10 GB for £15 on a rolling monthly contract with 3 mobile that I can easily cancel. The dongle can run at high speed and importantly has an external aerial input. I have a square 17dbi booster aerial fitted to the wind generator pole. You can pinpoint the nearest mobile mast via the OFcom website and point the aerial at it to get an even better signal.

When I leave the yacht I can take the dongle with me and plug it into a personal mifi device I bought from China, so I have broadband for my ipad/laptop on the train.

Ive got wifi broadband for all visitors to the yacht. I can take my broadband with me if i go away. I can go to France and get a pay as you go French sim and have broadband in a French marina. I could share the cost with nearby yachts.

All works very very well. I apologise for being too geekie.

Kind regards

Brian

As far as I am aware all of the Huawei mifi units are backwards compatible as far as the original GPRS (2G) service however there is a setting in the menu that can force them to work on 3G only. If this is switched on it obviously wont work with any of the slower systems.

I am using the Huawei E586 in Ilford, north devon in a spot that is almost dead to mobile signals both voice and data and an area notorious for poor data speeds and it is pretty good at extracting an hspa signal reliable enough to do remote server support and software development. It drops back occasionally to edge and 2g when hings are tough.

2g = 9.6k
2.5g = 56 to 115k
Edge = 1.6 meg
HSPA = 14,4 meg
4g HSPA = 21 to 670 meg!

Just saw a Yagi Wifi high gain aerial on the Gadget show, looked fantastic at picking up wifi hotspots from a distance (4km), can you use it with a Huawei wifi router?

No, 'cos the the Huwei is aimed at picking up a mobile phone type signal not wifi. The Huwei uses the mobile phone dongle to generate its own wifi hotspot so you can share one mobile connection between a number of wifi gadgets. If you want to use the yagi array, it goes straight to your computer and will need either an unsecured wifi signal or one which you have the password for.
