I have various chromed fittings: window surrounds, door furniture, side lights, on the boat. The chrome is old but intact. I was using a tube of something I got from a car factor, can't remember the name but it came out like toothpaste. It was ok, but in unloading the boat I have lost it. So a retail opportunity presents itself! Any recommendations or warnings? The chandler has an ancient leaking tub of Davey Shine for 9.95.......Is that any good and should I worry about the pinkish leaking fluid?

I've always used Solvol Autosol on motorcycles and boats. Some say that's bad practice, because it eventually removes the chrome after repeated use. It does, but it takes years of aggressive application, and you'll notice it happening before it becomes an issue.

Actual toothpaste is OK (don't worry about flavour), if chrome is really grotty, suggest 'euthymol'.
Then wipe over with baby oil to maintain the shine, works wonders.

Autosol is basically an abrasive polish.
It's great for aluminium, and stainless steel.
If your chrome is intact, you just want a wax polish to protect it.

If you have fittings which are fiddly then applying the green jelly like substance used for cleaning hulls has good effect if washed off afterwards . If no autosol or peek to hand astonish works well and stocked cheaply in many places.
