Which marina??

We try to leave the marina Friday evenings and either pick up a bouy or go to itchenor where there is a visitors pontoon. As there are generally two free flows through the lock per day we try to get there in time for one of them. Otherwise leave it till later in the day when there are less boats trying to get in.

Re: Which marina?? Chichester

As other peeps have said on busy summer weekends come down late on Friday to miss the traffic, and park on the pontoon outside overnight. Your departure time is then up to you.

I believe the Marina will move your boat outside for you as well but have not tried that myself

The harbour is also good in winter, the other weekend we had a good thresh around under storm sails in a sunny F7/8, apart from one other and a cockler nobody else out. A good last safe sail as I am on the slab for a hip reskin in March.

Hi and welcome.
Chi is the prettiest local harbour by far but has its disadvantages as others have said. The Hamble, Lymington and the Beaulieu are expensive by any standards. Pompey is by no means pretty but it has lots going for it. Lots to see and you may even meet Solitaire if you are unlucky. There is a marina in Langstone harbour at Eastney but Langstone is a bit of a non place really. Forget Southampton and all its waters. Happy sailing.

Congratulations (or is it commiserations ) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif on your first boat.

We are based in Chi, its a nice marina, but the lock is a real pain when the weather is good, it can go from a 15 minute wait to over an hour in just 15 minutes of listening to the requests for lockouts.

The staff are great, always happy and helpful (and polite enough not to laugh at our first time errors, well not until we were gone /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

The surrounding area is nice for walks and access is good on the roads.

But the distance to the sea seems like a lifetime and in our year and a bit getting over Chichester Bar has been rough more often than not, it takes quite a while to get from East Head out past the buoys where you can speed up to make it comfortable (for mobo’s anyway)

Other people in the marina are generally nice, the restaurant is not bad but too pricy at night, meals are good, but sometime you only want something simple to eat and in the evening it only gourmet style meals.

The boatyard are helpful but again very expensive, at almost £400 for a lift & scrub and drop back in.

Then when you get out into the sea it’s quite a way to Cowes, Gosport etc. (well I guess it seems a long way for sail) I would prefer the Hamble but prices are robbery. Chi is expensive enough.

Gosport is handy for getting in and out quickly, but I quite like the calm of a marina like Chi when moored, some of the berths at Gosport rock quite badly with big boat movements or weather. OK most boating types won’t be bothered by that I guess.

Good luck

D

Have a look at Haslar, it has no shore storage and no onsite lift out facilities, but Gosport boatyard is just around the corner. Haslar has all tide access and you can get Poole or Weymouth in a day if you catch the tides right.

Haslar Marina would be my preference in Portsmouth, it it has to be a Marina berth (I believe they're the cheapest too). Gosport Boatyard used to run a water taxi service for their moorings. The Fuel Barge at C&N (Ancasta now?) suffers from wash and chop so I reckon the outer marina berths would be uncomfortable. Port Solent is mega expensive and a long way from the sea

Thanks for all your posts. It's good to get some inside info.Just got to choose now!!
See you out there soon(hopefully)
