Lucky you ! The boat I was on ran aground - must be the boatone penchant for shallow water cruising I suppose

Nice little red herring you threw in about the kings palace and the moorings being full though

If it helps anybody, I've been through that particular lock several times since I first started cruising on the Thames but only twice since we bought Legacy. Sometimes in daylight, sometimes at night, never when raining, and always with lock-keeper assistance.

The first tidal lock on any waterway is always a big 'un.

Talking about big locks, I don't expect anyone to identify this one (go on, surprise me!). Its on the Neder-Rijn and is more than 210 metres long. Amazingly they operated it just for us and without making us wait. I shudder to think how much water that took.

Can't find the figures but from memory it was 23 metres wide and the fall was around 3 metres. You're going to do some sums aren't you

Big but certainly not the biggest we have encountered in our travels. The North Sea Locks at IJmuiden are awesome with the biggest at 164 ft wide and a fall of 39 ft. Very gentle but not for the faint-hearted!

If i'm not much mistaken that lock is Esna lock in Upper Egypt. ;-)
