guys,

I'm just putting my 'new' engine together. as its ford endura de based, I have a haynes manual for it :)

I'm putting the sump back on. It's an ally casting on this motor. I have a brand new rubber oil sump gasket, however the haynes manual says to 'also add some jointing compound to the areas shown' - Pretty much the four corners and where the sump pan covers the join from block to timing housing.

quick google suggests 'hylomar blue' is appropriate for sumps as it stays a bit flexible.

Thoughts? is that an okay product for this?
also, the haynes manual just says apply the compound, doesn't state which side of the gasket - both?

as always, muchos gracias

I know nothing of marine engine practice but when I put car engines together I would use plenty of clean thinners to thoroughly degrease the two mating surfaces then apply clear silicone (although colour not important!:-)) to both. Not too much; just enough to cover the surfaces. Too much may cause a lump of silicone inside the engine. Leave for as long as possible (overnight?) before starting the motor to give it a chance to cure.

I have a friend who is an very good engineer and independent mechanic. He uses silicone in a big trigger operated can for all mating surfaces (unless they have specified thickness gaskets).
His is orange :D

I cracked open the sump of one of the companies BMWs while on a long weekend holiday in Yugoslavia (a long time ago while it was still called that). We filled it up with oil again, but it took all of about 10 minutes to completely empty again.

We filled the crack with the only sealant we had available out in the back and beyond of communist Yugoslavia on a long bank holiday weekend which was chewing gum.

It worked so well, that we did not bother doing anything about it when we got back home to Austria. It leaked no oil. And only several months later when it was in for a routine oil change they changed the oil pan as well.

So anyway - my guess would be almost anything will work!

PS - you need to chew the gum first!

Blue Hylomar would be an excellent choice. Just a thin coating in the areas indicated.

I would put it on the joint face of the crankcase before positioning the gasket.
