My Clarke jigsaw has just about given up the ghost in a shower of sparks and a niff of roasting plastic. Can anyone suggest a replacement that might last a bit better? In the past I have used excellent kit by Bosch and Elu, but I am buying this myself and would prefer somthing modestly priced if possible!

I had an moderately expensive Black and Decker, which would never cut straight as the blades always seemd to bend to one side, leaving cuts in thick material with a very obvious "out of square" edge.
I bought a Ferm branded pendulum action saw from Screwfix, and that seems to cut much better. How long it will last I cannot tell, but it seems to be a pretty good tool for an occasional user.

I've found my Makita very good indeed, probably not the advice you want but I'll look up the model number if you wish

Tend to agree. Have bought a number of 'FERM' power tools and all 'do their job', even if at what is usually termed 'entry-level''. These days I adopt the buy-and-throw-away attitude for occaisonal tools.

My best power tools (and kitchen appiances!) by far were from Sears (USA) in the days when they were manufactured in the US .... built like tanks; came with exploded parts diagrams; and spares still available 25years later.

I have one of B&Q's own make , the pro, blue in colour, Had it about 18mths now and have worked it hard as I work for myself and cut a lot of ply for under tiles etc, and sometimes tiles with it. It also can scroll around curves.
Good value for the money, and I think it has a three year guarantee.

Second vote for B&Q own brand, have hammerred mine to death over the last 2 years, gone thru a pallet of 10mm ply and a pallet of 5mm, whilst building, and still going strong!....if it goes wrong or breaks you get another to replace it (providing u still have the receipt)

I've tried a number of cheap to mid price models over the years - but never found them satisfactory. Then I bought a Bosch - there is just no comparison.

So far the jigsaw is the only power tool I've found where the difference between the cheap and the quality models has such a difference on the finished piece of work

/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gifI have had a Bosch for 25 years, cost a fortune then, well over £100 !! but still going strong, wonder if the same can be said for cheap models.

Oh and it is used weekly.

A Waddingtons 1000 piece keeps my missus quiet for ages, unless I knock it off the table by accident.

Let her get on the computer and have a look here. Totally addictive when you're bored.

I am another Bosch fan although my jigsaw is a Metabo, also German made.

Thanks everyone. I am going shopping today and will see whats available. I am tempted by the B@Q suggestions, I have a drill of theirs which has given good service. Brian.

I really think it's worth paying the extra money and getting a good...cheaper in the long run too I believe. I've got a couple of Bosch tools and they've given excellent service despite heavy use.
