My boat was last antifouled in June 2010, I do not know which antifoul paint was used because I purchased her in December and when she was lifted for the survey she was still very clean. Last April I started seeing extensive brown growth at the waterline to about four inches below, and in particular the bow which was most exposed to the sun, the rest had only some brown sludge patches (I dived to check).
Between May and June due to the good weather a long green beard also grew around the waterline.
Now I have two Jaycar kits/transducers which have been running 100% time since 12 June (one month exactly) When I activated the USAF I also scrubbed the waterline with a brush to get a good start. The cleaning wasn't perfect because I did it from the pontoon, but I could see that most of the waterline was back to antifouling paint.
After a month there is no more green beard growth, but I see that shorter brown algae have settled in again, which BTW are harder to scrub.
I was wondering if I had the transducers fitted correctly. I used silicon grease to fill the irregularities of the hull, which funnily it was white when I put it there, but have now become cloudy and oily, so it no longer has the consistency of grease.
Is silicon grease the correct compound to use? I read on different threads that for depth and fishfinders transducers castor oil is used instead.
