Which is the best way to move my boat..

from Gosport to Poole harbour?
I really want to take it by sea as it would be by far the longest voyage I've ever done (all of 45 miles!) and would be something of an adventure...
Or, hire a trailer, and slip it at either end.
The trailer option is far simpler, obviously, as weather/time/tide considerations can pretty much be ignored (apart from having enough water at either end!), and also I end up with a means to get home.
If I go for the boating choice then-assuming all goes to plan with the weather and we get to Poole ok-then I end up standing on the side of the road with an inflatable dinghy, an empty coolbox and a mile walk to the nearest railway station....and a two hour+ journey back to Gosport to the car...
What would you do?
 
I would definitely take it by sea if you are happy with the boat's condition. 45 miles isn't so far (2 & 1/2 hours ish) and you will be close to land all the time. Pick a good calm day and enjoy it.
 
I remember taking a friends Princess 32 last year from Neyland to Bristol - Kavannaugh Quay - and the most we managed was 6/7knots - and more often than not was 4/5 from the twin Volvo diesels hammering their way away under the rear deck..... I obviously don't know what boat the OP has but you'd have be zipping along very well to do it in under 3hours!!

drive boat to Poole, Gosport to poole cruising speed 3 hrs all these coming 7 days, evening tides, leave Gosport at high water down the Solent take north channel cross Christchurch bay, Poole

get wife/girlfiend/friend to met you at Poole,

45 miles is nowt. Surely you can organise some one to pick you up, or a taxi to the train. What sort of boat, it's not a canoe is it!!:p

Wife doesn't drive and will be on boat with me-might possibly organise a mate to meet us in Poole, otherwise 40 quid train fares back to Portsmouth.
Boat is a Fairline Weekender with 5.0 litre Volvo AQ225D so I'm reckoning on 100 quids worth of fuel...

Boats are used to this, 'snarf snarf'
The Failine is well equipped for this type of 'adventure'
I reckon you are spot on with the fuel cost too.
Plus it will be good for you to work out the tides and nav and stuff
It's ok for hlb to say he did it on the back of a fag packett
Now I know he smokes as much as me if not more!
So its ok for him an me
We got loads of material to sketch on
But I reckon three packets will be enough for your first big trip!
 
You have to go by sea!!!! Slightly silly not using the boat for what its made for :rolleyes::rolleyes:

I recon you will have a great time - cruising in to poole you will wonder how you could have ever even contemplated using a road!!!!!!!!!!!

There must be dozens of boats on here that would travel in convoy with you, to give you ease of mind, show you into Poole etc, or people that would come with you on the boat (though later still leaves transport back problem)
Def do it by sea though, once you've done it once, you won't think twice of doing it again.

If it's your longest trip, it will be an adventure. Being all nervous and wanting a wee all the way there is all part of the fun. Sounds silly, but while the neighbours are all watching the East Enders omnibus and living life through the telly, you can be out doing real life stuff, even if it is only 45 miles :)

Everything we've done with our boats has been new and an adventure. When we get old and wrinkly, we'll be able to tell tales about it all lol

Don't bother faffing about with the trailer! It's vastly easier, quicker, more fun, and probably cheaper to move the boat on its own bottom.
(And don't bother with the coolbox, either -- use a few carrier bags and some newspapers -- then you can shove them in a litter bin rather than carrying them home!)
The biggest problem I can see is how you move the inflatable from taxi to train, train to train, and train to taxi.
Three possibilities:
(1) Don't. Find somewhere to store it in Poole, ready for when you do the reverse trip.
(2) Buy a collapsible sack truck.
(3) Forget trains as well, and use a friend or a taxi for all the land travel.
 
Thanks for all the encouragement guys-if and when I make the decision to go (weather's gone for a ball of chalk now!) I will see if I can rustle up some support-even if it's only on the other end of the VHF.
