Need to aquire an inverter for a customers boat. I can fnd the article in MBY which compared varioues makes, and mentioned sine waves etc. Can anyone recommend a good one say from experience.

The owner has on board a microwave, computor, ...electric hob & kettle..., the last two are too much for an inverter I am sre.
 
Also interested in this. On another American forum specifically for cruising boats the Prosine 3.0 inverter/charger has had quite a few glowing recommendations. It should be man enough to run a kettle but not a hob. Not sure if they are available this side of the pond.
 
today you have monophase invertors up til 3Kw, and by cascading units you can go even higher, but everything depends on the number and capacity of your battery's.
(easy to calculate, pls asc if you need help)
We have very good results from "Victron" multi power plus units, available in different power versions. Not the cheapest, but certainly not the most expensive, but good quality.

I run a Waeco 2kW modified sinewave thingy. Seems OK apart from it's polarity reversing trick (OK once you know about it) and the TV, laptops and everything else are happy with it. The only thing that doesn't get on with it are my daughter's GHD hair straighteners. Cost about £280 from memory.
 
I recently fitted a Victron 3000w inverter / charger and am very happy with it.

Fitted in 42 foot Sea Ray and have also fitted 630 amp hour domestic battery. Runs everything except hot water and air con, does run toaster, all female hair devices, tv's and kettle and hob.

Most important that battery monitor is fitted.

I've got a Victron 2.5KW inverter and very pleased with it so far.

It has all sorts of additional features, like battery conditioning, auto generator start (if the voltage drops below a certain level) and the ability to suppliment the generator and accept additional power requirements (5KW for mine) for short periods.

Even when there is no load on the battery, all loads switched off, you need a certain degree of charging, (or discharging) to keep the battery's in top shape.
all this is done automatically in such a unit.
 
Just like Bart says!

I was advised to get a "good" inverter, with this sort of feature, as it can save you money in the long run and your batteries are likely to be more reliable, never overcharged and give a much better longevity!

Bart am I missing something here sounds like you are talking about a battery charger? An inverter is used not to charge but to take current from the battery to convert to 230/240v yes? Never heard of an inverter monitoring and charging a battery

This Victron Unit is a Charger & Inverter .
a cleaver bit-o-kit but not cheap
 
as sailorman say's, the units we talk about here are combined charger and inverter,
more expensive as an avarage invertor only, but affordable for the quality and features you get. They combine everything in one unit, price indication: 470 euro for a 800W unit, 1300 euro for a 3Kw unit (charger and inverter combined, with lots of extra features) other models available aswell.
