my new boat arrives in 6 weeks, i have no-one to ask for advise, as i am new to this boating lark. basically i have been quoted 1000 euros give or take from st. margarets, and i have had a similar quote from panatenus (excuse the spelling) can someone recomend any one else,? it is not so much the price of the quote but the after sales service.

thanks in advance

tom

Well, you could try...

Well, you could try CraftInsure who have an excellent online quote system and will probably ask for about half the other premiums you've been quoted. And they debit your credit card monthly.

You'll never be able to judge the aftersales service until you need it. Then, you could find that it's brilliant, or you could find it's rubbish. And your claim might not be paid. Or the insurer might go bust. The possibilities are endless. The only certainty is that it's a gamble - whoever you choose.

I sincerely hope this post doesn't qualify for the currently popular award of a yellow padlock.

Suggest try Bishop Skinner. They are recommended by the RYA & RNLI. Years ago I used Navigators & General and found them ok.. Having said that, I have never had a claim..touch wood!!!

I chose www.craftinsure.com, not because the premiums were very cheap, but because I had read good things about their claims handling in a letter in PBO (but given the recent arguments, perhaps this is not the best way to make a decision given that the allegations of good service levels could be inaccurate). :).

You should be padlocked for this, you said they could be "rubbish".

Got to laugh really !!!!

I have heard nothing but good things said about GJW, but alas they will not insure catamarans, ah well.

I am considering St. Margarets or N&G, just got to get my gas inspected so these companies will allow me to give them my money /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

For my sins I am a member of an old but small Club called the Oxford Ditch Cruising Club. By a quirk of fate they own their own Brokerage. Ordering your insurance through them causes them to return all commission to you barring 5% which is retained to cover expenses. The club costs £25 to join and £25 p.a. membership but I save over this each year which makes it damn good value.

Re; St Margarets. I have been with them for years and had a number of no-fault claims (amazing how some people cannot navigate a river without bouncing off moored boats) and they have always been spot-on with their after sales service & claim managment. Worth a few quid extra for good service.

I had a quote from BS who offer 10% off for RYA members, they were 40% dearer than Mardon (after their discount), someone did say that Mardon specialise in smaller sports boats.

I Use Pole Star, and have always been pleased with the service and the price. When I needed to make a claim after the mast was damaged they payed up promptly. I Can't fault them.

A friend of mine has had similarly good experience with GJW

I'm with GJW - been very good and competitive so far. Of course the real test is when you have to make a claim which I haven't had to do yet.

I've got to agree, KC Powell seem very reasonable and you actually get to talk to a real person who knows his market rather than someone in a call centre.
Obviously the real test comes when you have to make a claim, fortunately something I have not needed to do yet!

Julian - in relation to my post a couple of weeks ago regarding qualified gas engineers - I managed to get mine checked and a certificate issued for £30 call out and £10 for the cert. I asked my (then) local yard to arrange it. Unfortunately this was in Dover which is nearly as far from Wales as you can get!

Do you have a local boat yard who may be able to help?

Cheers

I have found Bishop Skinner very helpful and practical over the past three years. They are a bit sticky about leaving boats in the water all winter. Robin Knox Johnston's outfit is flexible about that and they sound as if they should have the knowhow.

Why does no one recommend Bishop Skinner? They are endorsed by the RYA and the RNLI. I was with St.Margarets but when I bought a bigger boat on a deep water swinging mooring and their small print specified having it lifted and checked twice yearly I changed to Bishop Skinner. I'm fortunate that I haven't yet had to claim. Has anyone experience of claiming with them?

KC Powell only ask me to let them know when in when out etc. If I leave in for winter .. the excess goes up a bit but no arguments - no fuss.
