I was thinking of buying a Garmin 72 (about £135 with the 12volt lead and case). I have just seen the Garmin 76 on sale for just under £100. I would have to buy the 12 volt lead extra, but it would still be cheaper than the 72. It has a higher resolution screen than the 72. Is this no brainer or are there drawbacks to the 76?
All I want it for is as a back up GPS to the chartplotter, and to be able to use the anchor alarm.

Also the 72 doesn't have an external ariel capability which might prove usefull if using hooked up to your PC down below....I'm not sure it has a usb out either....could be wrong though. Looked at the 60? Doesn't have marine maps but lasts much longer on a set of batteries, might be useful if ever called on for use in a liferaft........

We use the 76.
It talks to both the VHF/DSC bit and tells the laptop software where on the chart the icon should be.
Very straightforward with handy things like ready-wired power/nmea socket which for the less technical of us is a bonus.

Norman.....the best price I've seen for a GPS76 is way above the "just under £100" you mention. Where did you get it at that price...surely not new
