Hi,

I'm interested in getting a Garmin GPS (and plotter?) for my boat.

I was wondering which model you might recommend? I'm going to be using it mostly inshore in the Devon area.

What factors should I consider?

Thanks

Floob.

I have not long purchased a Garmin 192c for £399 from Marine Superstore Port Solent. It has quite a small screen but works well. It took a while to get my head round it, but I bought a spare cig lighter lead so I could play with it at home, now I can do most things with it. You will of cource need a card for it make sure you it covers your possible cruising area.I found the tide information most usefull +recomended anchoring spots. The only thing it does'nt do is give the direction of the tide in real time. I was told the only one that did that it was a Navman very large screen one at £1100.I was also told that Garmin might be updating with this in the near future. Before you buy one try and find a place the have a few different models to have a play with its a lot of money to part with if you are not happy with it. Best of luck.

I've got a Standard Horizon CP155 with the NT+ Superside chart for the English Channel, has been a great piece of kit, still learning functions on it 6 months on!!! think it was around £600 inc Chart!! It has a 5 or 6 inch colour screen which is very good and easy to see in bright sunlight!

Navman 5500 gets the good press and has benefits of the chart data compatability etc.

In true makkers style I went against the grain, didnt follow the rest and opted for the Garmin 172c. V.pleased, no complaints, charts seems ok to me, very Sun glare shiney proof, Garmin UK HQ 10 mins from home but you really needed to know that!

Concur with mad_boater Marine Super Store best prices I could find at the time incl postage, but I live near so stuff that drive n collect.
