I'm sure this must have been asked loads of times before, sorry.

I need to buy a handheld GPS for marine purposes only for a friend of mine.

He is an experienced sailor and understands technology quite well. He needs a hand-held device only 'cause he uses many different boats.

Maxim budget £350 incl VAT - Ideas/suggestions please.

Re: No problems with the Garmin 12XL so far.

And the beauty of the XL version is that it is possible to run it off wide range external supplies and antenna.

How about garmin gps 48 - also can run of 12v and use external antenna with bnc plug; has nmea op/ip and the usual range of accessories.

Garmin by far the best...

for service and after sales generally. I have found the basic Garmin 12 does all I need, but if you want to spend more for extra features then do a quick comparison on www.garmin.com

Used to have an Eagle...

which was almost impossible to get repaired outside of the US/ Canada. Garmin is much more instinctive in its menus, so easier to use, and the support is brilliant.
