Which is the best Marina in Gosport for a 33ft sailing boat?

Included in this question is:
Secure and safe car parking (very important),
Quiet Berths both from a sea state and noise point of view (especially for overnight during summer and winter storms)
Best facilities,
Friendliness,
General security etc

I live within 10 miles so know all about the A32 traffic.

Thanks in advance

Cheers Richard

That rules out Hardway (on the trots) and Royal Clarence which leaves you Gosport or Haslar.

Both Gosport and Haslar have secure parking but Gosport can be a bit lumpy so that leaves you Haslar

Haslar also gets a bit rolly on the pontoons nearest the main channel due to wash from the tugs and ferries (I was a berth holder there for 10 years).

There was a thread on this subject a couple of weeks ago here .

RC doesn't meet the very important criteria of secure parking - it's completely open for anyone to park, no patrols, no security, no cameras.

OK, I saw secure as meaning 'not on the road'.

Trouble is both Haslar and Gosport fall down on this criteria:

I have used both and the rocking you get from passing wake is pretty bad.

I don't think there is a Gosport marina that meets all the criteria. Perhaps the OP needs to define a few of those criteria and place them in an order of importance.

I have kept a 33 foot sailing boat in Gosport for the last 11 years and have generally been pretty satisfied. I have not stayed in either Haslar or RC for obvious reasons. I think the main advantage of Gosport is its proximity to the High Street and ferry over to Porstmouth. The main disadvantage is that the showers can get busy and the gents can get very hot and steamy in the summer as there has never been adequate ventilation. The wash issue is much better than it was now they have moved the entrance in the wave break and I do not find it an issue when staying overnight on the boat. I also get the impression that the berths are tighter at Haslar. Staff at Gosport are very friendly and helpful you can also lift out. Might I suggest you spend a night or two in each and see which best meets your criteria before taking on a permanent berth?

Just to clarify secure, both our cars are, in our opinion nice cars, which are kept looking good and we value highly. We appreciate they will never be immune from damage in car parks etc, however some areas will be more prone to damage than others and some car parks may be on the "yobs route home" from the Friday/Saturday night punch up.

Thanks for your replies so far.

Well there are plenaty of 'nice' cars in both Gosport and Haslar marina car parks as you will see any weekend, neither car parks are closed off to foot traffic and I suppose that its possible any wishing to cause problems will do so, however I have been in Haslar for many years and before that Gosport and I have never seen any trouble. I did get a scratch once in Haslar and that was another berth holder who was moving a parked trailer so he could park, that could have happened anywhere.
I dont think there is a 'best' marina otherwise one would be full and the others empty.
Just visit them all and talk to the staff and berth holders, I dont think you would be unhappy with any of them, but I would want to know what berth I was being offered before I put my money down, some berths are definitely better than others.
Personally I am very happy in Haslar, its very well managed and the staff and facilities are excellent.

I disagree in the case of Haslar AS LONG AS you are well up into the creek. There's very little wash/wave movement on pontoons A-E and if you are not too close to the long linking walkway pontoon, there's pretty well no noise from other users walking around. Of course, you might always end up parked next to a 'sociable' boat, but it seems less likely to happen in Gosport than it might be in Hamble or Cowes.

In Haslar, most boats are moored bow or stern to the harbour entrance, whereas in Gosport (Premier), some are moored sideways on. Consequently any wash that gets into Haslar tends to rock the boat, whereas in Gosport some boats will roll with any wash, which is more uncomfortable.

Yes fair enough. I guess the location in the marina will affect the amount and severity of the rocking. I am currently moored in Gosport and it is horrendous. Had a different berth earlier on in the winter and it was much better, even though it was on the same pontoon!

So, the answer to the OP may be Gosport or Halsar, depending upon if they offer you a berth in the less affected areas.
