The aluminium opening portlights badly needed an overhaul including painting and replacing the foam rubber seals. The seals need glue to hold them into the aluminium gutter. But which glue as the gutter has been freshly painted with the much loved new hammerite :) and a suitable primer. I am thinking that the solvent in contact adhesive will lift off the hammerite and make a non sticky mess.... I could do a test area but alternative glue recommendations appreciated.

Any of polyurethane adhesive/sealant (one-part kind cure by water absorption, moisture activated) as probably some already aboard :) Just check, they usually write "solvent-free" on them.
Assuming hammerite has cured already...

Thanks. I have some Sikaflex 291 that I want to use up and that looks compatible. I was thinking more along the lines of DIY type glues and the reason contact adhesive was recommended was to hold the seal in a rectangular shape from the free floppy circle it reverts to. However shutting the portlight will clamp it. Just got to keep the sikaflex where it is meant to stay....

Have you considered sticky backed foam strip ?

No! I bought the foam rubber rings before thinking about glueing, then contacted Trafalgar Yacht Services as to what glue to use, they suggested the contact adhesive, then I've just been removing the excess hammerite and started thinking about solvents..... However it maybe that once cured, the hammerite could have the contact adhesive applied without reaction??
