Hi,

I have got to get the oil for my Fairline 40 Flybridge gearbox's that are coupled to 2x TAMD 61A diesel engines. Not sure what model the gearbox is but it would have been standard fitment to this boat in 1989.

Does anyone know what the oil spec and quantity is per box please?

Thanks!

Twin disc reccomended mono grade 30W .
They do not reccomended multi grade -don,t know why ? -does anybody know why not ?
I have uses 10-40W same as engine full synthetic - no probs -my mistake
Then one 30 W and ,t,other 10-40W the multi runs at 1 bar less pressure for a given rpm .

Just as an update. I have the ZF 220. I only managed to recover about 1.5 litres of oil. I guess the rest is held in the oil cooler, etc...

I'll top up and check for levels when I'm back in the water with it running in neutral and just watch it for a few hours. I can change again when I get it into Ipswich.

My understanding is that multigrade engine oil has detergents to keep the oil clean. When used in a gearbox that doesn't have combustion to deal with, the detergents can foam resulting in poor lubrication. I'd stick to what the manufacturer recommends. They tend to know what's best. How much is a new gearbox compared to a 5ltr tin of oil?

SAE30CD is what you need for TD MG506 or ZF220.

The usual method if filling is to fill up to the marks on the dipstick, then run the engines at idle i.e. 700rpm (in neutral) and then check the oil again and top up if required. Do not overfill.

Our F40 some years ago had TAMD61a married to Twin Disc MG506. Our current boat has TAMD63p married to ZF IRM220 so familiar with both setups. Both use the same oil type and both have the same filling/checking process. Don't use multi-grade!
