which fish finder/depth Garmin or Eagle

I dont have a depth sounder as i cant afford to buy the transducer for my silva duel log/depth that alone costs far more than a clipper depth!!

As i have a wooden boat i dont want to cut a mounting hole in the cockpit.

Fish finders such as Eagle are stand alone units with transom mounted transducers i had an eagle on my Hillyard it was supposed to do everything spead temp etc but only gave depth and replaced my old seafarer (digital) 150

The Eagle dident seem to show fish either!! but had nice pictures of fish swiming by and at least told me the depth!

At the moment the Eagle 128 is the least costly at 89Euros but ive seen a Garnim 80 at 120 Euros as Garmin make such first class GPS should i pay more-go without food for a week-- and buy the Garmin???

A long piece of string with a lump of lead on the end which goes in the water is best. Don't forget the concave bottom end to fill with tallow for getting samples of the bottom! Even the most expensive electronic depth finders can't do that little trick.
Eagles are better at measuring heights than depths /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
i have exactly that though i dont add the tallow! and in winter i get cold and wet plus comeing into an anchorage i knows shallow i have to sound while manovering to more or less where id like to be,

Its one thing haveing a traditional boat but i bet even captin Cooke would have prefered an electronic depth that allows you to sound as you go while finding the best place to anchor--and when its windy and raining and your tierd not to sound can put you on then to kedge offs really irritating. i dont want to run aground

more importantly i want to know how much line to let go.
 
Hi,

I have used a Navman 4150sx on my Corribee for the last few years. This has proved very accurate and has the advantage of a log and trip aswell as the normal fishfinder features. I have the transducer mounted on a metal pole that lowers into the water which means I have no holes below the waterline. Good luck!!
 
Had a Garmin on the last boat, sorry can't rememember the model no. First class bit of kit. Carried on working for six months after I dropped the boom on the display; eventually water got in and it died. Replaced with new. I would always have a fishfinder, even though I haven't managed to catch my lunch with it. So much better than a standard echo sounder. Wooden boats need a bronze fitting which ups the price a fair bit.
 
Only piece of advice I can help with, is the Eagle is very suseptable to misting up on the inside, at least mine was. The rep said to leave it on & the light will keep it warm & stop the condensation!! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Your back! I wanted to ask you what you thought of port Napolian?? Ive seen it shopped there (ages ago) but never stayed there.

Whats it like when your aboard there for a few days. hows the atmosphere? staff wise to clients? And did you bike into port saint Louis? if so how was the road bike wise and time wise??

Dose anyone live aboard there????that is all year?

Have you seen the new Humminbird "side scan" fishfinders ? The pics on their web-site are truly astonishing ! web page

I bet the examples were scanned on a mirror-flat lake with no wind, but still mightily impressive. Now if I can just persuade SWMBO that she doesn't need the american style fridge-freezer she has her eyes on with my Xmas bonus ....
 
Amazing! Poor fish time they got jamming devices to swim about unseen by modern tech!

I think ill go for the garmin, it is the price as well!!I do fish but not really seriously. Even 10 years or so ago in the med you could wait untill a suitable shole of fish arrived throw bread in the water then cast a hook with bread on it near lunch size fish and catch 1 2 or 4 depending how many wanted to eat!

These days while there are still large fish there are so few now that the small ones eat the bread off the hook and the large ones are very wary-i havent caught a fish since 1998 and then the ones that i caught were to small and were put back.

Now if i want to catch fish i tie up by the fishing boats and look hungry!!
