My wife and son are doing their day Skipper theory course and I would like to remind myself of much that is needed to cruise extensively.

We have used a Video 'Understanding Navigation' by Amberly Marine which we have found an excellent learning aid and is also available as a DVD.

What excellent DVD aids have you come accross to help with your sailing and sailing courses pl's?

Might help them if you get a DVD which matches the charts/questions used on the current DS courses.

I have a freebie given by the RYA for marine diesel engines that runs through the basics. Buy the book and the DVD comes with it. There are plenty on YouTube too just search for the basics on there.

I used The Complete Course (http://www.longbow-uk.com/) and would highly recommend it for the technical content. The graphics are not up to the modern standard but it's crammed with good information. The latest version contains an electronic plotter for the chartwork exercises.

There are also a series of videos on Youtube (can't give you a link as it's blocked here at present) from a sailing school in the Solent which you can download for free. They cover Course to Steer, Charts, Tides etc. etc. I got these after my DS but I would recommend them as the topics are covered very well, and he offers some good tips.

If the intent is to go onto a current DS Theory course, the charts used, are nothing like anything previously used.

So, to keep some sort of continuity & eliminate any confusion, get a set of the current course stuff - any school should be able to get a set.

Are you referring to the RYA fictitious charts? If so, I see no benefit in only studying those. For me, I wanted to learn to read any chart, not just a made up chart to pass a test. After all, plotting is the same whether you are familier with the chart or not.

Yes, but if they are going on a course, why confuse the issue?
Finish the course & then do it for real!

The videos at Westview Sailing are good and use current RYA charts - which if you are doing DS assessments seems useful, as the questions will use them.

I'm not sure from your question exactly what you are looking for but DVD's by Sir Tom Cunliffe tend to be very informative. Do you want something specifically related to the shorebased course or more general seasmanship skills to enhance your cruisng knowledge?

His Electronic Yachtmaster is good, IMHO and his RYA Coastal Skipper which although the clothing and especially the haircuts will make you cringe, contains useful learning.

The author of that course is a friend and I have sailed a few thousand miles with him. I would recommend the course for a complete grounding in cruising, not just the stuff needed to get you through the RYA exams.

I have often heard it criticised because it isn't like a video game but learning requires the student to make the effort and anyone who expects to sit back and watch flashy graphics as an alternative to putting in the effort is deluding themselves.

The course is the only one I know of that takes you from first setting foot on a boat up to YM Offshore.
