Hi..I want to re-engine a 30 foot GRP long keel boat~4 ton ish. Is there a view in the forum...re Bukh...Yanmar...Nanni... Betamarine etc I'm thinking of 20hp + And does anyone know a good website for impartial comparative advice? And a good fitter in the Plymouth area!
Many thanks

I had the Peachments supplied Nanni, not a disaster but wish I'd gone for the Beta; Peachments after sales service & interest in problems are non existant in my experience.

Thanks..I've heard of transmission hiccups on Nanni...may not be founded...but I understand they have excellent access for servicing..excellent emissions and come ready to slot in...engine mountings willing!

Just had a Yanmar 3Ym30 from Dickies in my Pentland. Very pleased. Smooth (3 cyl) quiet & powerful. Also much smaller & lighter - always a bonus on an overladen cruiser! No problem getting to hull speed at reasonable revs, even with strong headwinds.

Streets ahead of my '73 MD2b thumper in terms of vibration & noise. Also pleased to have indirect cooling system rather than raw sea water. Engines are a good price but installation (with all new kit) and labour charges are pretty high - take engine price & double it in effect!

Hi, I had a 20hp Bukh engine in my previous boat and now I have a 20hp Yanmar in my current boat. Well, I suppose into every life a little rain must fall.

Bukh, Bukh, Bukh. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
DV24, can be started on the handle, very useful for those "blonde moments" when one finds one (or swmbo) has run all the batteries flat! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Raw or fresh water cooled. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Does not know when to lie down and die. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Simple maintenance. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Great after-sales service. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Spares (if ever needed) are relatively cheap compared to some makes. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
DV24 even comes in a Turbo version giving 30+hp if that takes your fancy. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Reliable. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What more could one ask for? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My last boat had a rather tatty Perkins 4108 which I replaced with a new 48hp Yanmar. This did some 1700 engine hours before I sold the boat and did them without a moments worry.

I would go for a new Buhk engine, the new 24 is even better than the old 20 and it will fit straight into the old space, no new exhausts , electrics fuel piping etc. I think if you do a full costing of the project the Buhk may even be the cheapest solution.

A mere stripling, my Yanmar has done 4600 hours, and I know one with 6900!

Sailing boat, but previously chartered. Averaged about 650 hours per year under charter. This year I put less than 100 hours on it. It runs very sweetly, with no noticeable smoke. It was always well maintained, and because it is the larger engine option for the boat (88 hp) it does not need to be pushed to anywhere near full power revs to achieve a good cruising speed. The engine is continuously rated at 3400 revs, but 7 knots comes up at less than 2500.

Replaced our ancient Thorneycroft with Beta 35hp four years ago. Smaller, lighter, more powerful and quieter.Problems since, the warning lights in the standard panel seem prone to corrosion even though well lubricated and protected by an outer clear panel and the plastic clamps holding the sump oil hand pump both split though they appear to have changed thr design since. Rather surprisingly I had no reply from Beta when contacted about the design of these brackets ( I had already made new brackets so did not require replacements) as most people seem to praise factory support.

Of the three engines in two boats in my 20 years of sailing:
Volvo - nothing but trouble
Yanmar - excellent
Beta - excellent

My experience is limited to only 2 but

Volvo - nothing but trouble and Volvo Penta just don't want to know

Yanmar - excellent

One of the main criteria in choosing our last boat was NO VOLVO BITS. It's my view based on very expensive experience with 3 new boats!!
