The good ship Ballena has been for sale now since October 2003 and only one sniff.

I really need to have it gone by the ned of Feb due to business commitments.

Any suggestions on which broker would be best for a 98 Four Winns 238 Vista lying Portsmouth would be really appreciated.

It is currently advertised with Jaykay Marine in Burseldon.

Thanks in advance

Some boats sell quicker than others for various reasons. It could be price, condition or presentation to the market.
That does not answer your question which Broker is best. I would suggest that you talk to the Brokerage that supplies your boat new, they might have contacts looking for second hand boats.
Failing that go to the Brokerage that you feel advertises the widest in boating magazines or has the best Website, also advertise it privately if you are not already doing so most Brokers don't mind provided you come to a prior arrangment with them.

Well not to say that JayKay arn't terrific because I've never heard of them. So I'd start with a broker that has a good advertising presence like, near to you, Williams and Smithells in Southampton, I know and trust David Smithells.

I'd also consider the same price and deduct the brokers commission and quietly add it to www.boatsandoutboards.com and see what you can do yourself.

What price are you looking for to sell by end February?

A 'no offers' private sale in boatsandoutboards might be worth a try...

I've learnt some rules over the years for selling boats on brokerage. Best bet is usually the dealer for the manufacturer of boat you have providing that he has an active brokerage section. Otherwise choose a broker who specialises in the type of boat you have. Most importantly, it makes sense to move the boat to the broker's premises as it makes it easier for the broker to show your boat to prospective purchasers and most purchasers are not willing to travel any great distance to see a boat. It also serves to remind the broker that he has'nt sold your boat everytime he walks out of his office. Most brokers will do a deal whereby they store your boat at their premises free for a limited period. Check that the broker has the details of your boat correct on the particulars, that the boat appears on his website(if he has'nt got a website, walk away) and that the website links into the ybw.com and Boats and Yachts sites. Ring him regularly to ask if anyone has viewed the boat
Ensure that the boat is kept clean and tidy. Good idea to have it antifouled and serviced so that the buyer knows he can go straight to sea without any major costs
Having said this, its always worth advertising the boat privately. I've found Boats and Yachts good
Bear in mind also that autumn and winter is a bad time to sell boats. The buying season kicks off with LIBS ie. about now so expect to see some activity in the next couple of months

Sorry to hear you are struggling to sell. When I was looking last year, Atlas Marine on the hamble had just sold a 238 and as Four Winns dealers they could be worth a try. Seemed like a reasonable company when I was talking to them.

Best of luck

I would give Richard Bates of Bates Wharf a call. He is an excellent Broker and also has a very good patter when it comes to the advantages of Petrol Boats. He sold me one.

He is well postioned in Chertsey for first timers from London.

His number is 01932 571 141

Only thing to bear in mind with using the dealer of a make as broker is that they have a vested interest in second-hand models of the make they sell being advertised at high figures, makes the residuals look good and new boats easier to sell, also easier to "up sell" a potential used purchaser to a new boat if the used one is at an asking price of not too much lower than new...

Also, a lot of new boat dealers concentrate on the new stuff or their own p/x's (for obvious and understandable financial reasons) with brokerage playing "second fiddle".

I'd look at their adverts to see how serious they are about the brokerage side of their business, colour advertising in the major glossies means they intend to shift some serious brokerage to justify that expense.

Also see whether the type of boat they most deal with is of a similar style to yours as people looking for a particular generic style often go to the "known" people first.

Agree about Richard Bates of Bates Wharf, he does seem to have a lot of the single petrol sport cruiser style boats.

Think you'll be lucky to expect a fresh broker to shift it by the end of Feb though, it'll take them a month to even get it in the mags!

Ari.

By the looks of it - you have pitched your boat at the top of the market - although not unreasonable against the competition. Quick search has thrown up a '96 238 for £25k, another at £26k. A '00 258 for £32k. Other makes Sea Ray, Maxum etc... are all up for the same money - so I don't think the broker has overpriced.

When I was buying mine, I kept a look out from Oct onwards, then started hunting in the New Year with an offer placed mid Feb. If you need to sell it quickly, Essex Boatyards could possibly buy it off you - at trade price though.

Hold on for a few weeks - the season is only just starting now LIBS is over.

Essex boat yards sell a lot and act on behalf of dealers with their part exchanges etc.

they try to sell within eight weeks, they have a high turnover of boats and people know to go there for the sort of boat you are trying to sell.

he might not get top price for yours as he gets interest through 'reasonable' pricing but im sure hed get it sold for you quickly.
