We used to fly the Tricolour on the port spreader because Milady's French. We gave up after about the 10th person in a couple of days told us we'd forgotten to take down our courtesy flag.

As for GB/UK, I'll be sticking with GB until it becomes illegal and (preferably just before) that illegality is enforced.

Stickers are £2.99 on Amazon so may be worthwhile buying some and keeping them in the glove box and say you forgot to stick them on. Risk there is that the ferry staff used to slap on a GB sticker on the trip without your consent, usually in a strange place at a weird angle. I imagine that will start up again

If this thread were in PBO rather than Scuttlebut, surely it would be a bit of duct tape and a black marker pen, rather than Amazon for a UK badge :)

From the very half arsed research I did the requirement also seems to be for a Union Flag on the sticker as well as the UK designation. Presumably this is to ensure we cover up the EU flags on number plates. There does seem to be some confusion and overlap with the green rectangle plates which identify zero emmission (during use) vehicles in return for various freebies and bus lane shenanigans.

So that's what it was. I saw one yesterday and couldn't think what it was. My best guess was a fervent Br*****er covering up the EU flag on his plate!
I eventually looked it up after seeing a load of them and being very confused. Initially I thought it was some half arsed protest against country specific plates, or a weird cost cutter for car sellers. Turns out they get all kinds of freebies.

Reverting back to an earlier question considered in this thread, I think that while the red ensign is the correct one to fly on the starboard signal halliard as a courtesy flag for a vessel visiting the UK, as that is the country's maritime flag, it is the union flag/jack* (*delete according to taste!) that logically should be flown on the port signal halliard to indicate a UK person aboard a foreign-flagged vessel.
