Would second the Monterey 250 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif just got back from the Channel Islands in ours /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi guys,

thanks your your comments so far. The boat will sit on Loch Lomond but looking for something I can spend weekends on with the family my Bayliner 192 is just a tad small for overnighters.

Is diesel really a requirement? I would have thought with the prices going up in a matter of months you could get a better boat with a newer V8 MPI engine.

The Bayliner 285 is a cracking boat, does all that you want brilliantly and could probably be had with a diesel for your money - the trouble is finding one. If not, save £££ and get one with the 350 MAG engine.

Yip totally agree.

If its for Loch Lomond, I'd recommend the Bayliner 285, a few of the guys in our old marina have them(Ardlui). Massive boats great space, and most of them powered by the Merc 350Mag, a stonking engine.

Price new on Prossers website is £59k, a bit over budget, but i think its a buyers market, so i don't see any problem getting the price down to within your budget. And that would be a brand new Boat!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
If it has to be diesel Prossers have the new 245 and 265 listed also which is probably around your budget with diesel.

Prossers also have a nice Hardy Seawings 277 with a 200hp Diesel, I was on this boat last week for a look, nice boat, good accomodation with 2 doubles and a single berth. The interior is maybe a little bit dated, but then its under budget so you can afford to spend a little on new cushions and stuff! Best of all ITS a HARDTOP, great for our sunny/rainy/sunny/rainy/rainy/su/rainy/rainy/sunny climate! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Go into Prossers and have a look at what they've got.

Good luck with the search.

Cheers

Al.

Al,

I was at prossers last night and we seen a 2004 Diesel 220 HP, 9.14 m in length with fly bridge for £55k in really good condition. Was just curious to if there were better boats to be had for that sort of money ?Dont want to rush into something like this without getting some advise from people who have boats like this. There spec reads

Desciption

One of the most popular Bayliner models, the 288 is one of the smallest flybridges on the market. However, do not think that its relatively small length means interior space is compromised. Walk through the sliding patio doors into the 288's saloon and you will be amazed at the well thought out design. A large elevated convertible dinette hides a well appointed bunk, while the large fixed cushioned v-berth requires no fiddling with tables to set up. She houses all the home comforts such as hot and cold running water, cooking and cleaning facilities, a large bathroom and shower and a dual helm system. The flybridge is spacious and well thought out with seating for at least 4 adults. This is the ultimate fun in the sun vessel and its versatility is perfect for the ever changing UK weather conditions! Enjoy year round boating at a fantastic price!

Features include:

1 x Mercruiser 4.2 Diesel Engine

They are good boats the 288 - I wanted one when I bought the 285.

To say they are the most popular is stretch to far though.
I ended up buying a 285 precisely becasue no-one had a 288 to demo in the UK. All the dealers at the time said they would sell one, but wanted a 20% deposit with order as in their words 'they arent that popular over here'.

I dont know why not though, I know a few bods who have had them and all seem really pleased.

There was quite a few threads on this a while back, and there was some debate as to the suitability of the 220Hp motor - some felt it was underpowered but the new search engine means I cant find the thread /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Ah, yes Chris, Didn't realise you said 288 in your origional post.

I only went on 2 boats last week when i visited them, first went on the Hardy Seawing, then I went on the 288, I presume you are talking about the White Hull one, thats the one i went on.
Reason I went on it, was cause i think its a great boat and I like them, I wanted to see what that particular one was like. They are good accomodation, this one seemed very tidy and even had the polythene wrapper still on its aft cabin mattress!
Again its enclosed, so good when raining, and having a fly a definate bonus, one thing i did notice was there was no covers on the inspection hatches on either side of the radar arch.

Regarding Power and GPH, I don't have enough knowledge to answer, but suggest you make a new post asking about that engine in that boat.

Nice boat though, what did swmbo think?

Al,

Thats the bad boy! Nice huh. I did notice the hatches missing but they are getting replaced. Wife thinks it will be good to spend weekend's on this with the boy (now 9 months), but just need to decide if we need something this size or would a petrol 285 be better or should we just keep the 2007 192 that we have just now since it is paid for.
Chris

Thats a difficult one, a 288 Diesel or a 285 Petrol!

Hmm, Its down to personal choice!
The 288 does have the best of both world, open top or enclosed hardtop boating, Diesel engine, it may or may not be powerful enough! Good accomodation although I'd be worried having my 9mth old in the cabin as where the seated/dinette area is, there's quite a high step from there onto the cabin floor, easy for a nipper to fall off of.

The 285, Could be a newer boat, Open top, huge canopy to deal with but better seating outside when the weather is nice. The 350MAG is a great engine 300hp, pretty economical as its MPI but then its a heavy boat, fuel would be more consuption and costly than diesel, can you afford the running costs? I personally feel there is more space in the cabin of the 285 than the 288 and better laid out, but then thats only my opinion.

Which would i have?????

Neither, I'd have....THIS!

I do like S28's this one has the all important Blue dash and cherry wood inside.
This one is a bit over budget, but If you were to do a search I'm sure you'd find a diesel well within your budget. Another forum member just bought a single diesel S28 this year from Prossers for i think under £40k. Prossers do have 2 at the moment, but i can't get into their site at the moment. 1 i think is priced at £65k and the other £79k i think. But if you spoke to them I'm sure they could probably source you one within your budget! We were out in the £79k one a few weekends ago, and thought it absolutely fantastic.

But seriously, the 288 and 285 are great boats, I don't know which I'd choose.
But worth checking if the 220hp diesel is powerful enough.

Cheers

Al.
Edit: Heres a nice one within reach HERE.

I like S28's - Didn't know they were available with single diesel? What engine? And is it underpowered?

The 2 I've seen have been single Mercruisers.

But they did do it with a single volvo KAD42 once.

I'm not used to these size of boats and diesel engines, so can't comment on whats under powered and whats not! I'll leave that too the experts!

Cheers

Al.

Agree with advice for a well sorted older s28.

We were in a simillar situation last september £55k budget with same basic wish list.

Sought advice from this here forum, either new as poss, single diesel or older well sorted s28 or targa 28/29.
Looked at all of the new/newish offerings in our budget but kept returning to a 14yr old Targa 28 with new engines & drives.

The final decision was down to the advice taken here.

Looking at those new or nearly new £55k offerings from Monterey, Bayliner, searay etc, all very nice & the big hit in depreciation has been had the day the first owner took delivery, prices still look to be good after the first season but are offset by the equipment thats been added, hence the resale looks good but there will still be quite an amount of depreciation to come once you take ownership.

The older homegrown models of sealine, fairline & princess seem to have an edge here, depreciation has slowed to the point that the most popular models ie the s28, targa 28/29 & the princess 266 the prices hardly change.
What made them great boats then still holds true today, well built, well speced & built for british climate & waters.

I know the lure of a new boat all too well but after the shine has worn thin a season down the line then perhaps you will understand why an older boat can be a better option.

Of course if the decision is new equalls reliability then only new will do unless you like us find an older boat thats been reengined but even then nothing is guaranteed.

We bought the Targa 28, it was the right choice for us, you will need to pick & choose old or new but there will be an older very well looked after example of any of the above for sale, within budget out there, somewhere.

This thread really said it all.
