I need some help and suggestions here people. I've had a very large stroke of luck with a cheque from my bank due to the PPI mis-selling calamity and I'm looking for a new boat.

I have £2000 to spend and I want something small enough to sail by myself which won't be a burden on me (18ft - 22ft ideally). I want to sail it along coast and creeks, possibly berthing near Southend or Queenborough, so not too deep a draught. The boat will, however, handle well wherever it's sailed and must accommodate at max, myself and my two teenage boys.SWMBO couldn't give a flying fart about boats!

Preferably with some goodies but not over-endowed with chart-plotters. Must have a back up engine and would prefer an outboard but I may be persuaded otherwise.

I've been looking at Hurley's but have I missed something out there that you would be willing to steer me in the way of?

Thanks in advance.

For creeks and muddy bottoms a bilge keeler would be good or even a drop keel like the Seal which I seem to remember being quite roomy below. One of my favourite boats was the Hurley 22 which had a 10 hp outboard in a well just forward of the rudder which meant it behaved almost like an inboard - even had a hatch cover over it !

I believe there's a cabin cruiser with a bad osmosis problem and a dodgy engine at Bray that may be had for £2K ish.

Edit to add - Hurley 22 - I know nothing about sailing but have already added a Hurley 22 to my 'one day I hope I can list'. Can see a couple for about £3K online so within reach?

No Sign of osmosis, engine runing well, Freeman 22 and yes £2k... Wouldn't sleep on her with the engine running though ;-)

Thanks for the sensible replies. I've got the Hurley 22 on the list and id pushed I may give a bit more for the right boat. People speak highly of them and the 18ft. Some others to look at also. Cheers.
