Good forum,

One of my sealed lead acid batteries has died and needs replacing.

What is the general view on these versus gel, what price should I expect and where to buy?

We currently have one 110ah engine battery, 4*110ah domestic lead acid, one of these is the dead one. (my little one watches a lot of dvds on the tv!)

Thanks in advance.

Don't mix batteries. If you have 3 good and 1 poor lead/acid you should only replace with one of the same type and Ah capacity. However, if one in a bank of 3 has gone done, consider replacement of all batteries.

Contrary to the article in Sailing Today, Gel aren't the best for a marine application. Go for good quality lead/acid standard batteries or, AGM - but be careful (use thick plate AGM not the thin plate ones available from most resellers).

Richard,

No worries..! No ones ever rude on YBW!

They are probably all the same age and were installed together. If one has come to the end of its life, its probable that the others will too. Also, if one in a bank has failed, its likely to have over discharged the others which could mean they are on their last legs.

Sods law always dicatates that the others will fail on a lovely sunny friday afternoon before the annual cruise or on a lee shore just when a call to the coastguard would be appropriate!

All the best - James
