Which Antifoul?

Which Antifoul would you recommend for the tidal Medway?

Tim,it really rather depends more on the on the sort of boat you have,as you probably know a displacement boat needs a softer A/F whereas a sport boat needs something harder.
Having a boat since the dawn of time on the Medway, can honestly say have yet to detect any real difference in weed growth between the most expensive stuff I have ever purchased and some free stuff that has come my way.
The market leaders can all be rather expensive, but an online search can turn up some less well known brands that have received good reports.
My boat this year was painted in some expensive Blue stuff until it ran out and the bottom of the boat was finished off in Red stuff.

Thanks

I like blue stuff too mind you being colour blind it could be anything from purple, mauve lilac? lol

I have a gobbi with a planing hull which currently has black stuff on it

We have found Premier 1 Can from Premier Paints

to be very effective. We arer Not on the Medway mind.

We picked up a can from the manufacturer at a local boat jumble for £20 and it works exceptionally well where we are based. We have used it for a few years now. We last antifouled in March and as yet we have no signs of growth at all. This is on a 25ft planing boat.

Thanks CX54WEK looks quite reasonable.

Silly question from a novice, do you have to thin it down to apply? and what prep do you have to do?

Thanks again

Pressure wash bottom of boat, slap antifoul on with a roller, where lots of protective clothing, one coat is enough for me:D
I use black stuff, International bottom coat at £29 for a big tin from Gael Force when they do a special offer which seems to be every week.

Assuming your existing antifoul is in good condition then a good pressure wash should be all that is needed. Allow the existing paint to dry from the wash before applying the new stuff though. Give the paint a good shake and stir before applying it, then just slap it on with a roller. Not a hard job and quite satisfying as well.

If your existing antifoul is a bit flakey or patchy it may benefit from rubbing it down to a smooth surface before applying the new stuff.

Just out of interest you didnt buy your Gobbi from Burton Waters at Lincoln did you? If you did we were on the hardstanding adjacent you when you picked the boat up to take her to the Medway :)

And as a newbie, I cant get my head round the following:-

When I have the boat out of the water and need to antifoul, how do I do the bits that are obscured either by the blocks/stand she is on or 'straps' from the lift-out?

<rubs chin in puzzlement>.....

You can either pay for the chocks to be relocated, get one of the yard lads to paint them when the boat is back on the launch trolley/slings or just not bother. We just dont bother.

Those areas will have some paint on them still.
