Which antifoul paint removers - liquid or just elbow grease?

Anyone ever tried a heat gun on antifouling?

I got that T shirt about 30 years ago. I took the wooden rudder of my Seamaster 23 home and removed its antifoul and varnish in a small room with the window closed. It made me cough a lot. It was only later that I pondered the nature of boiling antifoul. H & S was not such a big thing then.

I have survived quite well considering; the roll-ups I used to smoke may have done more damage. But I haven't repeated the exercise.

From what I remember, it was a fairly effective method of AF removal, if not very healthy.

In 1995 I used International Interstrip (http://www.yachtpaint.com/gbr/diy/products/special-products/interstrip-af.aspx) on our Freedom 30 hull. Counted 16 coats of old paint. Did the work on the old dirt "hard" at Swanick Marina, where they had a "sand-blast" booth set up. It was February! Painted it on thick in about 1m square patches - left it to bubble-up (about 15 minutes) and then scraped it off. Re-coated until had had got through to gelcoat. It took three sessions to do it, but the stuff did just what it said on the tin; finished each session by wiping down with thinner; left a beautifully smooth clean hull. Wasn't difficult; I was only 49 then!!!
