Which anti fouling for Menai Strait

I know that barnacles are very prevalent there. I couldn't recommend an antifouling to use but you always have the option of drying and scrubbing.

When we had a mobo on the Menai we used Cruiser Uno for a couple of years but found it gave up halfway through the season. I then moved on to the cheapest antifoul in Dickies but put two coats on: that did us a season without barnacles. That said with a bilge keel boat, easy enough to dry out on one of the sandbanks and give her a mid season scrub if required.

I’ve been in the Irish Sea for the last 20 seasons. Conwy, Menai and Holyhead for the last 10+ years. I’ve always used a single coat of Cruiser Uno with a second coat on leading edges of the foils if I’m in a good mood. Only ever needed a quick jet wash as the boat is lifted.

Hiy Joy

I can't advise on AF for the Strait but I am sure the guys at Dinas will tell you exactly what to use.

We happily benefit from being based in a freshwater fed dock. Not had to touch our antifouling since we bought Bluenote 3 years ago! Just a pressure wash off and an anode check or change once a year using the wall and scrubbing pad at Dinas.

Some of the deep water mooring based boats came into the dock to over winter afloat. Many are finding any saline based growth on their boats has now fallen off! We have had a lot of rain this winter.

Have you thought about a mooring up the river Seiont at Caernarfon as this has much the same fresh water qualities as at Felinheli and is very suitable for a bilge keeler? If you go the freshwater route check you are using the right anodes. Zinc is no good in brackish water.

I thought I hadn't heard Avalon on 69 for a while. Has she a new home?

Steve.
