Which anchor?

im just reading through this and wondering how on earth anyone can manage 60 meters of chain and several kilos of anchor up in the anchor chain locker.

you must all have way bigger boats than me.

I wouldnt want all that weight up front, much happier with twice the length of the boat in chain.. plus loads of warp to take up the snatch. 60 meters of chain is the equivalent of 3 fat blokes sitting on the bow roller. I'd never winch that up even on a calm day...

am I too frugal then? Ive never worried about my anchor pulling out, but then i generally only day sail or anchor infrequently.
my kedge anchor is frugal too with chain but plenty of warp again.

Your 3 fat blokes can't be that fat:D 10mm anchor chain weighs around 2kg per metre making 120kg for 60 metres of chain and say 25 kg for the anchor.

If like many on this forum you are at anchor for much of the year then the previously mentioned 60 metres of chain plus 60 of anchorplait is a very sensible and prudent compromise.

When the wind is whistling through the rigging and its all getting a bit tense the last thing you are worrying about is the weight of anchor and chain;)

Ive been impressed by all the reports on the rocna. Its expensive but it seems to be universally given the thumbs up from anyone and everyone who has used it.

Im tempted to get one eventually, but the good old CQR will have to do until then.

I have often wondered if its worth having a bigger longer chain and nylon line stowed away in a locker midships for the occasions when I might need something more hefty.
but I wonder if splashing out on a decent rocna might negate the need for masses of heavy chain?

oh, and anything over 60kgs for me.. is starting to be fat. (power for weight ratio really drops off in people as they get heavier. ;-)
