I am looking at the Fairline, Sealine and Princess 42's, and love the Fairline Squadron, has anyone purchased one of these in the last 2 years and would they still buy the same??

many thanks in advance for any guidance on this topic

Hi Paul, I'm in same boat when I've sold my princess410 just want to upgrade to proper stairs to fly etc.

The bargain boats are the princess 42 though I've been told the earlier ones with the 75 series motors leave soot all over the stern, cockpit and rear of the flybridge, this reminds me of my fair line corniche days when you had to hose yourself and the boat down after 50 miles at sea, it really should not happen in this modern age.

The sealine f42/5 is quite quirky with it's extending cockpit, the finish isn't as good as the others 2, fair line just give you the squadron which is a slouch with the d6 370 in, ive been told 28 knots max when new and unloaded.

Mid 2000 fair lines at 40ft is the previous phantom, it's a tiny boat but well styled for its era and one of my favourite .

Personally I'd still go for the princess 42, but buy wise as they made loads of them and one day like the sc 35 there will be many for sale which means you have to sell right.

Princess 42 with D6 engines. Loved ours to bits, everything is just the right size and power plants are perfect. Feels bigger inside than the Fairline although the Fairline has a better flybridge layout. Nothing wrong with the Princess flybridge and it is well protected when under way, just the Fairline packs a lot up top.

But the Princess wins for us.

So you've sold the boat then Paul. Well done.

Henry :)

Alas, Henry if you mean me , it's a big no no, I just wonder where to go next to sell it.

Whichever you choose from those 3 boats will be a great boat, so you have to remember that all this discussion is splitting hairs and like debating whether you like the Ferrari or the Aston

Ref the Sealine I'm assuming you mean the new model F42? (The F42/5 is nice but dated in its styling). I guess you either love or hate the F42. It has some strong features incl more cabin space, but a lower quality/price of internal fit out, so it is in the second tier in this debate. But cheaper to buy. The "walnut" panels are actually printed melamine style veneer, not real wood, which can be a big turn off

The F and P are both fantastic boats. The P is very dated now, and you'd have to get along with the trad interior and glossy woodwork etc to prefer it to the F. It has a poor flybridge layout, as do nearly all Princesses except the ones they've designed in the last couple of years when they got someone on the team who knows how to design a fly. The Squadron flybridge is way better

The Squadron has the edge in build quality and has a way more contemporary fresh feeling inside and out, and if that's what you like as opposed to the trad feel of the Princess then the choice becomes easy - there is perhaps 10 years time difference in the design age of the P and the Sq. I much prefer the contemporary design of the Sq

If you buy the Sq it will ikely still be a current model when you sell it, wheres the Princess has got to be due to be replaced soon - it had a face lift a couple of years ago which modernised it a bit

Paul is right that the Sq is not fast with the 370hp engines. It is a bigger boat than the P with more weight. Relatively few have been made with those engines (6, I believe) and you need to get the 435hp version which most are.

I think F made a mistake in designing the starboard cabin in the Squadron. They should have made the floor of the lower helm station higher, to put more headroom in the cabin. I find this an annoying mistake but each to their own and it may not bother you esp if this is just a cabin for kids

(Remember, whichever boat you buy will always be a bit of a compromise anyway!)

Are you buying new or used? Where will you keep it?

Happy shopping

Actually I prefer the Princess fly layout myself! I like having the seating area opposite the helm so that the helmsman isn't left out of any socialising and in the Med, the seating area would be covered by the bimini as well as the helm. The P42 is a bit longer too so whilst the Sq42 is definitely the more modern design, IMHO the P42 still has something going for it

Which 42 Fly

I keep hearing about TAMD 75 Ps being sooty and smokey............let me put that one to bed.....had mine for nearly six months and have not had to wash any soot off the stern/fly in that time and have used it over 8 weekends or so. A well maintained engine should not smoke.

Also great to have that extra 90 horses on tap over a D6 when hauling a big gennie/passerelle and the wifes wardrobe around!!

In my eyes the P42 is a fantastic all rounder........75s or D6s............a true classic!!

Hi, I'm sorry to say but it was your boat and others I was referring to.

When your boat came up from the west country to swanwick we viewed it, in the process my wife ruined the top she was wearing when we climbed aboard, the grime was even on the radar arch.

I'd keep the bottom clean as it was this I'm told that causes the overload on the engines, next time you see a phantom 43 or 46 take a look there just the same.

By the way a great boat and on my list for sure.
