Ok there's not enough what boat threads on here.... And I change my mind about the future every day. Today's scenario is:

30 foot. Club racing. Ok on a mooring. No bilge or lift keels. Tough as old boots. Fast. Safe offshore.

Before anyone says not safe offshore someone in here did the Jester Baltimore challenge in a Hunter 707!!

http://www.jesterinfo.org/jbc2015entrylist.html

Roger Fitzgerald did the North Atlantic Jester in his Dehler 29. Video on YouTube. He said it was a bit light! Im probably not going to do the North Atlantic though anyway as I am a wimp! Would like to be able to go most places though. No long off grid though. But maybe cross biscay in the summer.

Ah yes budget. 25k. Then new sails, offshore stuff on top.

Got to be able to convert back and forward from racing to epic expeditions.

Tall order? That kid did it in his Sigma 33. They are a bit old now i think?

I am planning being poor in a few years. Had decided Elan 333. But maybe should go 30 feet so sails are cheaper.

A Dehler 31 meets that spec. IRC is quite kindly to them. Quite sea-kindly. And of course there's the YouTube video.

There's also an Elan 31 equivalent of the 333. A fair few in Ireland as they were sold out of Whiterock in Strangford Lough. I've seen them raced quite competitively. But only RCD Cat B.

Lynx looks nice. But expensive I guess and not much accommodation for the size.

Impalas can also be quite competitive under IRC. Probably not as tough as old boots for offshore, but I think there's an owner or two on the racing forum to give you the low down.

Just two observations. first the two requirements are so different any one boat would be seriously compromised in one application. Second the old chestnut - budget seriously limits your choice to old boats.

Scenario. New product committee of boat builder

Marketing man. "Found a gap in the market for a dual purpose 30' boat capable of being competitive in club racing and as an ocean expedition yacht"

Designer "You must be joking!"

I get this entirely. But needs must..... I will avoid gales with judicious weather and gadgetry. If I get in one I don't want to die. Other stuff can be basic so tankage for example will just have to be done without!

She 31 - various versions with different lids but all moderately fast and very seaworthy. Not big inside, but you didn't ask for that. Hustler 30 another candidate. Or of course a Contessa 32.....

Interesting. 1990 boats though. Was hoping 1995! I think the Dehler 29 I mentioned is the newer model. Still asking 40k plus! This needs to be cheap or the alternative is no boat......!!

I used to work with a bloke who'd done all that in a GK29.

Older boats. I have a 1990 boat at the moment. For some reason I am fixed on getting a newer one. But really on my current boat I have done the standing and running rigging and sails. So maybe I should get over it!

Again older boats. My current boat smells pretty good! So a new criteria is not smelly! !

As Tranona mentioned, a decent post 1995 serious offshore boat will tend to cost you more than £25K; out of curiosity I did a search and came up with a couple on Apollo Duck, both around that price - a 1998 Dufour 30 Classic maybe comes somewhere meeting a compromise of your 2 criteria and a 2004 Benny First 25.7 will certainly fit the round the cans bit.

Yes, I think the 29 was from after they replaced Van de Stadt as the designers. I guess you could always find a more recent boat you like and make an offer. Sooner or later there'll be a boat where someone accepts, except the usual caveat that fixing up a boat costs a lot.

Could you retrain as a maintrimmer and accept a boat share?

Of course. I am after ideas like that dufour 30 classic. Club racing bandit and strong? That sort of thing!

38k. If we hadn't brexited would only be 30k (wrong forum!).

My worry is that I buy a GK29 for 15k. Spend 15k and have a boat worth 15k. Newer means a bit less of that I think.

Ah sure, just wait till the next Greek default. Or maybe a Spanish one if they don't resolve their tiff with the Catalonians.

And the pound isn't doing too bad. They were offering parity in shops in Newry under Gordon Brown's reign. If the BoE up the interest rate it'll come up again.

Bought a motorhome a few years ago and got 1.39! Now sold. Bit of a way to go. . . . . .
