Which 30' boat for liveaboard in the UK!

Ah yes - your infamous Black Horse Chinese Restaurant. The one to the South as you put it, has been a private house for the five years I have lived here.......

So there's even less to go to then !

No need to get your knickers in a twist, I am talking of the practicalities of living on a boat; on long cold dark nights a warm pub serving reasonable food is a godsend, and the other facilities of a town are jolly useful too.

Even Northney has a small shop on site, petrol station / shop just up the road and two good food serving pubs a walk across the bridge.

Chi Marina is fine in its' way, but it IS limited unless jumping into a car and driving somewhere, probably Chichester.

Okay, I give up! You are right, there is nothing at the marina at all. Nothing to see, nothing to do, nowhere to eat, shop, drink, no views, no birdsong, deer, greenery, no country walks, no parking, no facilites, no laundries, cafes, clubs, no nothing whatsoever. I am so glad you are able to put me right based on your last visit - which was probably as Skipper on Noah's Ark. Thank you Seajet, I am enlightened and grateful to you.

WestWittering,

OK, as soon as you can gather up the toys from around your pram, pray tell ,me what IS at Chi Marina then ?

Yes, plenty of wildlife, nice scenery & walks, history too; I like all those very much.

Good loos & showers - BUT when I was last there they were a bit of a muggers' paradise at night with lots of bushes and dark spots between them and the pontoon, we actually felt we should escort a lady who was crewing- has this been rectified ?

As far as places to go of an evening, The Spinnaker, the new Bistro, CYC or walk to the now Chinese pub.

In the daytime the rather limited and expensive chandlery, Chris's stainless fabrication workshop and the good if expensive yard.

Maybe the brokerage if still going.

Birdham Lock Stores went years ago unless it's re-opened.

There was the cider emporium just short of the pub but I think that has closed ?

What else is there which doesn't require a drive of at least a few miles ( and the traffic on and off the Witterings is often terrible, I was passing yesterday - Wednesday at about 15:00 - and traffic was queing on the roundabout ) ?

If only it was that easy........
If his wife is not into enjoying his passion I hate to say it but it's probably just a temporary fix.
Jim. You are a lucky man.

Ian, I am indeed.
You may note that I now also own a full size trailer tent, and my hotel bills have increased significantly.
So, I am always crafting compromises to ensure we stay content with our lot.
Note also that Full Circle has done less miles in the last 4 years than the first year of ownership.

If you were married to Seajet, I rather suspect that would not be the case now. He probably wouldn't let you drive his car/boat/whatever. And I bet you can't read a map either. Or hold any opinion not previously vetted. Phew, you have had a lucky escape as far as I can see.

Well I tried marriage once, let's say I must be a poor judge !

Actually I'm sure I'd be happy to have Di helm boat or car if we weren't both spoken for, though I have a feeling the only waypoint would be just North of Birdham Pool ! :)

ooh thanks Tidewaiter, I would glady exchange booze for some of Alices marmalade ;)

I'm still not sure about crewing I'd have to be doped up on Stugeron which makes you feel so ill in it's own right and not great company and still not full proof, or go out when it is really calm which can never be relied upon. Such a shame as I love sailing but every time I have gone from Chi to Gosport I have felt ill even on calm days, the slight rollers around Gosport entrance just finish me off so you can see how bad it is - a real curse but I'm not giving up, I would risk short hops around the IofW.

Glad you both worked through it, we've had our rough patches in 43 years as at last Thursday, I think everyone does, but if you keep talking problems through, and make regular time together as a couple, it helps a lot, particularly with a young Family.
Having met you all, albeit briefly, we hope you have a good few more visits to Wisley together.
You are welcome to collect another 12 months magazines anytime you are passing.
Also, Alice and I would be happy to let you crew for us- A has rules about November to March cruising these days , so I'm always pressganging victims, Oops, willing crew for the Club Weekend Rallies after Yule.
After our Baltic trip, we decided that long range two up trips are coming to an end, and the Boys have to find time off work, and our Rent-a- Crew pool keep getting enticed by Med and other exotic trips, just because it's warmer- wot's wrong with the Friesians in April;)

Thanks for the replies everyone. I need to take on more work so my wife can go part time as a teacher and reduce her stressful life and we need to actually make time to go out together without the kids. Being alone together for only an evening and day over the last 10 years doesn't give any marriage much of a chance - wonder if she would like to go to the boat show ;)

haha the sinister side of Chi and Birdham pool!! I shall view unlit country paths in a different light from now on :D :D

ps the bushes have been trimmed, all has been rectified ;)

When was someone last mugged at Chi Marina? And for a wet towel, half a bottle of shampoo and some dirty knickers? You don't score many drugs with that haul. ?

Those of us with legs are quite happy walking or cycling, and you don't get nicked for DUI on the way back, either.

Andy, you've really got to cheer up a bit!

Twister Ken,

I cheerfully walk long distances, as you say it's the only way if any booze is involved but I like long walks anyway; in my mispent youth I was known to walk from Studland to Bournemouth just to play space invaders, Northney to Emsworth and I happily walked from Chi Marina to the pub on the Witterings Road which I am somewhat gleefully told is now shut ! All in the company of chums and / or then fiancee.

The thing is, it's a bit different on a long cold dark winters' evening when living aboard, then a handy warm hostelry & food is jolly useful. When living aboard in winter at Emsworth Marina years ago - yes in my Anderson 22 - the Sussex Brewery was a treat, though they didn't charge about £10 a sausage in those days.

As for ' mugging ' it just seemed too dodgy for a woman on her own with a lot of dark hidey-holes in the shadows behind big bushes; the lady concerned is no timid little princess, though petite she once chased a known murderer at Brighton Marina - but she agreed she didn't much like the look of it either.

TK,

I did ask WestWittering if it's different now, I suspect and hope that it is.

I don't mind the lock but could do without the gin palaces trying to muscle forward under bare control; when visiting Chris Silverthorne at C B Marine for some stainless work I was amused to see a large pile of mangled mobo pulpits in a corner !

Rightho, I think we've none left in the house preserves cupboard just now:sorrow::sorrow:, but I think there's a jar still left on the boat:)
And it will be Seville oranges season just after Yule again, so the marmalade mine will go onto 3 shifts 24/7.

Re mal de mer, have you tried Scopaderm patches((off prescription now, I believe).
Alice used them as Stugeron knocks her out for a while after taking. I've used them too, Xtra strong peppermints and ginger, crystallised or fresh root slices for those long, calm, rolling, quartering, swell days, which seem to cause me to make Ivor the Engine noises

No oranges  You cannot survive without your orange nectar.

First priority this morning is to sort the UK's orange import quota out. I'll have a word with Cameron, he is obviously not on top of the job, people will be suffering out there this winter, especially the elderly (no reference to yourself of course). He doesn't understand the aged are stuck in their houses and more prone to scurvy. Whilst we have mountains of oranges dumped on to the docks I'll get an arctic of the stuff around to Alice :encouragement:

I'll try the patches also thanks for that :D

Oh no, Alice wasn't mugged for her Marmalade round the back of the Ladies ablution block? I think we should be told!

No, it's because her Road Convoy had to turn around back to Emsworth, as Alice's Convoy Escort Point and Close Support elements had blocked the two access roads towards Chi Marina with the bodies and burnt out transport of would be Marmalade Hijackers.
The Conservancy, Southern Water and WSCC sent us very snotty letters about the damage and clean up costs.
We had to resupply by sea, and thats not cost effective, given the Overnight stay peak rates, not to mention the queuing pulpit /pushpit basher lockers
