Which 12V socket ?

I have Dri-Plug sockets in the cockpit. Below I use these from Maplin

Well made and, at least to some degree, waterproof - they have a dust cap marked "Marine". Code A59FL, seven quid a pop.

I have used these in a number of situations including in the cockpit.

They are well made and the ebay dealer gives good service and pricing. He also sells good quality plugs as well.

I have seen the same things in other places for twice the price

Same thing, as far as I can see, and a couple of quid cheaper by the time you count postage. Thanks - I was about to buy another one...

so called "marine" cigar lighter type plugs and sockets are bad for reliability, and the contacts can be ****. Having fitted 5 years ago on a refit I dumped them, and replaced with a gold plated socket arrangement from Maplin. Two separate sockets, coded either red or black, each with a central socket which takes 4mm banana plugs, and knurled plastic nut which unscrews allowing the use of spade connectors and at a last resort has a hole in the middle which will take bare wires, and which the nut will clamp on. Good for 25 amps at 12v, and foolproof - oh and cheaper than a cigar lighter socket .

In the last few weeks have been using one socket with a high power lamp with banana plugs, and with an extractor fan with spade connectors at the same time. You can do that with a cigar socket!

Mind you such a system can lead to reverse polarity problems especially in moments of urgency, which is why idiot proof plugs have there place. A mate uses 1/4 inch jack plugs rather than cigarette lighter types.

My boat still has it's original car type socket still working after over 30 years, so they are not all duff. By the way how do you charge your phone on boardif you have no car type sockets..
