Wheres my anchor?

There nothing quite like, finding a solution to a, small, problem, then spending lots of time and money on an alternative less reliable alternative! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Not quite self coiling tripping line, but this is what I do: Tripping line buoy with small free running block beneath (mine's plastic - from Holt I think) then run your tripping line from the anchor, through a weight which is unlikely to tangle (e.g. short piece of SS piping), through the block and back down to a bridle on the top of the piping. Make sure you have enough line for max depth, the system will then work until the depth falls to half or less. At this point, you're no worse off then with a fixed length tripping line, except that you have less spare line wandering around the anchorage.
Tide then rises, buoy lifts with it and pulls weight back up the tripping line. Just a basic 2:1 purchase.

I'm with Boatkid. "its at the end of a piece of chain "

Who cares where the anchor is in relation to your position when you start to haul? You will either be tide or wind rode, experience (and the initial chain direction) will tell you which.

Plan to leave assuming the anchor is upwind or tide. Slowly haul in chain until short hauled. This may entail a change of chain direction but you will still end up wind or tide rode as before but your boat will no longer be where she started out. This may (or may not) require a change of plan but you have time to make that change before weighing.

I'll grant you that in a busy harbour or mooring with lots of boats coming in after you, one/some could lay across your chain, but how will GPS help with that? I don't see the problem you are trying to solve.

Never had a problem!

I have a strange suspicion, you might have an interest in another product! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

It is a lot more 'products' than just 'product' singular. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif But if you happy that is the main thing, something I strongly think is very very important and I'm not going to knock that. I'm all for personal choice. Sail safe /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
