Hello,

Some advice please on behalf of friends of ours. They're a family of 4, children are 8 and 14 and have wintered here in Marina di Ragusa. Their plan is to spend another winter in the Med before heading homeward across the Atlantic.

Any suggestions for a marina in the right direction that has a good Winter liveaboard community? Ideally it'd be somewhere where families have (or will) Winter again.

Many thanks in advance,
Samantha

I've wintered in the past at Torrevieja, last time in the Marina Salinas and a few years earlier at the other marina..Marina International? I may be mistaken but I don't recall that many youngsters at either, at least not as liveaboards. I've also wintered in Al Merimar and Aguadulce and the same applied. Quite a few liveaboards at each but at least when I was there, mostly wrinklies like me.
Thinking about it the place with most familes with kids was at Portimao on the Algarve, but I haven't been in the Med since 2011 so perhaps things have changed at all those places I've mentioned. :)

My wife, son (7) and dog will be wintering in Sicily this winter. It's our first year as full time liveaboards and meeting other families is something we really would like to do.
Is Marina di Ragusa a good place to winter in?

There were several families here this Winter, the majority went away for part of the stay. It truly is a lovely place to be, more than a few of us are returning but I have no idea if any with children are planning to come back.

Portimao or Lagos on the Algarve also spring to mind quite a few liveaboards in both places and kids, plus they are both nice places, Lagos better IMHO.

Can you give me an idea of prices and is there things to do around in the winter? We would have a car with us. Does it die like most places in Italy in the winter?

Pop an email over and they usually reply within a day :)

Town certainly doesn't die, with a car you obviously have endless day trip possibilities. Vibrant and socially fun marina community. Hope that helps.

Anyone with further information regarding the title of this thread please comment, many thanks.

are you getting extra discount with all the advertising your given them Sam ? haha
we just arrived in Greece after a slow 54 hour sail , short stop over before we head for Croatia that if we don't stay in Greece as the tax hasn't come in yet , what did I say all them months back ,
every one we know in licata had and many more had problems getting out , a few never made it out of the marina and had to be tow to the yard to clear all the fouling .
See you around Sam .
PS
we be in Malta next for a few months then we off to Tunisia for a few months so we might see you .

Somewhere near a proper school?
Please define 'Proper School? Do you mean State schools who give the kids no ambition and just meet league tables or schools that actually educate children and give them skills for life, not just how to pass an exam?

Anyway,it depends on if you are home schooling or not? In most European countries it is illegal to home school, so if you place your kids in a local school, when you take them out to go sailing your in deep brown smelly stuff! My kids are now 14 & 16 and we have home schooled for the last 7 years no problem, but have met quite a few families with tales of woe from the police, immigration after placing their kids in local schools in Portugal, Spain, Italy ,etc, etc.

We found the Med' barren of kids, plenty of grumpy old people (who hate the noise kids create while enjoying the fun boat life brings) going there to retire or die mind you; but none or very few kids most of the time! However we have had plenty of live-aboard boat kids around us since the Canaries and the are loads of home schooled kids from all over the world in the Eastern Caribbean.

Purely on the grounds of climate what about the Canary Islands : annual range 23° - 28°c ?
