Where to spend a summer in Holland, within striking distance of Schichpol airport ?

Thanks for all the info folks, This is the updated list. Got some prices, listed below for reference in case of interest to anyone else. All within relatively easy striking distance of Schiphol by public transport.
Enkhuizen seems a good option for location since it's positioned well for both the Ijsselmeer and Markermeer. Price is not bad (including free WIFI & services). Almere is tempting for quick access - quicker than getting to centre of Amsterdam apparently.

I would love to be able to go over to The Netherlands and also travel down via the canals through Belgium and France. A short visit to Holland is a possibility although the longer cruise is very much a future ambition. . I have purchased some books !
I have in mind crossing from Lowestoft to the South of the Netherlands and hear Middelburg and Goes are worth visiting . Perhaps I should mention my boat has engines - no sails.
The first step is to get to Lowestoft which is in itself a fair distance from home.

far better depart fro say River Orwell the a quick hop over to Belgium, then proceed to The Netherlands / Zeeland
 
Second that..
Hop to Breskens then across the Schelde to the canals towards Middleburg.

That way you can avoid the TSS roundabout outside the Schelde... and the moules frites are good.

I can't see it being a good base as there are five bridges in the town, you pay to transit if you don't stop overnight and there are some big bridges either end of the river/canal. These motorway bridges have restricted opening. It's worth a visit though.

When I was last at Harlem for the festival I stayed in the harbour immediately next to the first bridge on the south end at Heemsted & later at Sparndam just to the north . The festival lasted a couple of days & is extremely well organised & supported. The canal was shut for 3 days. Great fun!!
However, you are right that there is little point stopping south of Amsterdam long term as apart from bridges there is little opportunity to sail. Some of the bridges have restricted opening times complicating things further.

Thanks both for the advice.
I clearly have some further work to do.
At present I only have the cruising almanac (proper charts will be obtained before any journey). But I can see the the circulatory TSS . Presumably Breskens is relatively free of commercial boats and ships . I also see the recommended route for small craft going North over to Vlissingen. I have some experience of keeping out of the way of ships on the Humber .

The Schelde is a very busy river, feeding the docks of Antwerp

Sorry this is late ... just to finish this thread out... we did to to Ijmuiden in the end, stopped in the marina for a couple of hours and then into sixhaven where we occupied the last few square meters of water in the marina. We've moved the boat to Enkhuizen as a permanent berth for the easy train access, and couldn't be happier with it (Buyshaven marina, beside the train station - just a few minutes walk). Chris the harbourmaster was very friendly, as are the locals. Compagnieshaven looks good too, bigger marina, a little further from the train. We watch out for the cheap flights, then off the flight in Schichpol on Friday night and 1hr:15 or so straight to the boat from the airport station, back on a Monday or Tue night when we can get time off, works for us so far.
The best advice we got was to concentrate on transport links first (from a train map), and marinas second. www.rome2rio.com was a great help.

Any thoughts on harbour/marina's on this route with reasonable berths, good local cruising and easy transport links to Amsterdam ?

Not only a supermarket but two, and a brew house. When we were last there maybe four years ago there was talk about the Aeolus being compulsorily purchased by the town so that it could be used as a base for a footbridge over the Ij. This would be very sad as it is a comfortable and friendly place.
 
I have painful memories of Muiden. Our small boat was moored stern-to and I leapt aboard. Due to a misjudgement I clouted my kneecap on the wheel and was hobbling around for a while. It was also where a secretary lived after marrying a Dutchman. It was the last time I saw her before she died of breast cancer.
