Hi

I've been getting excited about the idea of roughing it on a yacht while at uni in Penryn... The prospects of realising this dream were looking good until i found out that the waiting lists for moorings are running at around 5 years at Mylor, by which time i would have long finished! A marina berth is out of the question, but i understand that there are some affordable pontoons owned by port of truro, though again the waiting lists for these are large.

The plan was to move down to the area over the next couple of weeks, sus things out and find a boat, but it's no good with nowhere to put it. At the moment things are looking bleak, but who knows i might happen to find "the boat" with it's own spot on the public pontoon... well stranger things have happened!

Should i forget it or are there other options and some hope for me yet?

Look at Ponsharden Boat Yard, a number of live abords on the hard and afloat, not high class, but friendly, 15 minute walk from the Uni.
Also there is Islington Wharf, and Muddy Beach ( along side the St Gluvias church, ) along side, a live aboard community there. Both these are cheap, every where else is expensive.
If you want more details let me Know.

Excellent, thanks a lot, it sounds ideal.
I'll be in the area around easter time and will check it out. Though any info would be great... i cant find too much on the net. Are Islington Wharf, and Muddy Beach managed by the Port of Truro? Also it'd useful to know if these spots are suitable for moderate draught long keel boats and whether they have pontoon or swinging moorings.
I guess it's very sheltered up there as well. The last thing i want is to have to row miles out to a boat in the dark winter months after a few beers!

My father bought a boat in Falmouth last year. Initially it was going to be on a drying mooring, (I think), but he managed to get a berth at Mylor.

I dont know how, but I'm guessing if you are in the right place at the right time, perhaps things happen.

having said that, he's always been lucky, so perhaps that's what it was.

Cheers

Richard

There are lots of places in the area, big question is budget, and transport, ie Mylor is not cheap and you need a car. Islington Wharf would probably be on land, but you can walk to the Uni.

Challenger Marine at Peryn is another possibility, Mylor comes under Truro HC, the rest under Falmouth H C.
Also remember that most swinging moorings in the area are only part year, and not used during winter due to Oyster fishing.

Yeah I was hoping to be within bicycle or moped range and had a shock when i heard the cost of a mooring in mylor!

1K would be about my limit for october to june (when i started investigating the possibility i thought a mooring would cost nearer 300 for a year!).
What about local sailing clubs or the anchorages by the falmouth marina? Maybe i could anchor there in the milder months and seek a berth or dry storage over the winter.

Depending on the size of the boat, Ponharden may be your best bet, we keep our boat there over winter, must be 20 + live aboards there. Costs us about £250 a quarter for a 27 footer. During Summer there are a number of spots you can drop you hook around Turnaware point, otherwise if you can get a mooring your paying out money, and most have a big waiting list.
Best to start at Ponsharden, Islington Wharf, Challenger Marine, Falmouth Boat Co, Martin Heard at Mylor Bridge. You may get a price from Mylor for shore storage, they used to have people living onboard.

Ah brilliant thanks very much, I may see you around... if my plans succeed!
But there's a lot to consider... Insurance, berthing, warmth, maintenance, etc. All in all I probably wouldnt be any better off than renting digs... but windwardly mobile /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
