Where to mount chartplotter

Hello All

I've just bought a Standard Horizon CP180 Chartplotter and am a bit puzzled about where to mount it in my Anderson 22. Can I mount it outside in the cockpit? The instructions describe it as "splash proof" which only which makes me wonder what would happen to it in heavy rain or if a big wave came over the deck. An alternative would be to mount it on a hinged board which I could swing across the companion way to see it from outside. Has anybody else found a neat way of mounting it so it is visible from the steering position?

Ours is mounted in the cockpit, where it gets the full force of the rain and a bit of spray. No problems so far, but it has only been there for a few months - during which we've been out in gales and torrential downpours!

I was worried about security, so have drilled a hole through the mounting bracket on the back of the instument, and have padlocked it to the instrument panel to make it difficult to remove.

Outside - ours is under the sprayhood on the hatch - and stowed below when not in use.....

I have mounted my plotter outside to the left of the companionway on a Ram bracket. www.ram-mount-uk.com/

Mine is inside, above the instrument panel, close to echosounder and speedo which had replaced an old fishfinder, all near the ship's compass.
The resulting deviation (12 degrees E-W, 7 degrees N-S) took a compass adjuster 30 minutes to eradicate at a cost of £145.

Outside, under the sprayhood to the left of the hatc hcover. I dismount it when I leave the boat. Radar screen is next to it as well.

mine is flush mounted to the bulkhead in the cockpit, seems to do fine but has no gasket, just added some silcon.

Mine was located in the cockpit near the cabin entry hatch and the lead went back through the hatch to the fuse panel. I bought a second mount from navman so now I can move the unit in or out as needs be. When the weather turns wet and nasty I can stay dry and work out the shortest route to a safe harbour. Cheers

If you cant see it from the steering position it aint no good!!!
Having to have 2 people to co-ordinate the readings is a recipe for disaster if both of you are not totally ofay with all things it can and will tell you.
or you are on your own or with crew who are not able to interpret ,then running to and fro can be time consuming or dangerous as usually the time you need this thing most is when you dont want to be away from the helm.

Having this discussion with SWMBO; she is firmly in favour of outside so when I need to re-plot destination cos of bad weather/change of plan (fiddle with it in her words) I don't leave her alone on deck to cope..

Still fitting out but, viewable from nav station and helm, just fit at the right angle

Below decks allows for a bit of protection, even if not strictly needed.

Thanks all. I think I'm going to use a swinging panel. I've seen some photos of one on another Anderson and it looks fine. Thanks for your input.

I owned a sadler 25 and mounted mine in the inside bulkhead on a switvel bracket. This meant it could be swivelled out to view from helm position and when not in use returned to the safety of the cabin. It restricted the companion way a little but well worth it for the security side i felt.
