I need to get the (T) rusty old ketch out for a lick of paint and some mechanical repairs (shaft) between now and May, we weigh in around 22 tons and circa 50 ft, draw 6ft, and i want to do the work myself and stay on board while I'm doing it, has anyone got any useful recommendations based on RECENT(ish) EXPERIENCES please ?

Portugal ?
Spain?
Gibraltar?

which marina or boat yard ?

contact details ?

all info gratefully received

Not the cheapest but good facilities, English speaking, lots of expertise, can get hold of anything, close to town centre, lots to do when not working:

Lagos.

Other option is Portimao but probably similar prices and more isolated.

Graham will be along in a minute to tell you all about Bruce's Yard at Faro.

No recent experience of Atlantic Spain and I think there are no longer any facilities at Gib.

It's prohibited in Spain (or, at least, Andalucia) to live aboard when the vessel is on the hard, although some small yards may ignore this. Best bet therefore is probably Portugal. Bruce's yard in Faro has a good reputation, although I have no recent knowledge of it.
There are places you can dry out between tides for nothing, but it sounds as though the OP has more work than is convenient for that.

Bruce's is in fact called Nav Pegos and they have a web site (I'm not clever enough to post a link) where they say 40 tons and 4.95 beam.
There is another in Olhão - I'll try to find their contact.

On the Algarve, Sopromar is good and has on-site chandlery but Bruce's in Faro (we're here now as usual for annual few weeks haul-out) is cheaper and much better for airport & train connections. Main difference is that Bruce's is a DIY yard, no boat maintenance staff employed. Living aboard no problem and shops 10 mins walk. See http://www.navepegos.com/

EDIT - This blog talks about Ria Formosa Boat Yard at Olhao - http://www.sailblogs.com/member/valiam/?xjMsgID=269907 All reports good, have hull blasting service and other skills on site but boats packed together like sardines.

Hi Ian,
Think we may have met in Cascais in Dec (Steve - 'Rivas'). Antonio at the yard up the Rio Tejo at Marina Parque Das Nacoes might be worth a call +351 914592231. We lived aboard for about a month this time last year doing jobs. Great location and Antonio and his team were first class. Friendliest marina staff too.
No skin, just a very satisfied customer.
Best
Steve

If you come through the Straits, Isla Verde boatyard in Algeceiras meets your requirements.

You can live on the yacht. They have showers and nearby cheapo cafes.

Hoist can lift much bigger and the rail system is used for tugs and commercial vessels.

Engineers on site if you get stuck, expert in steel painting too.

Best bit, its in the duty free area of the port so no IVA (vat) on all costs.

Hope this helps!

See http://www.jimbsail.info/tidal-europe/west-portugal

The layup information there, originally based on my experiences in the Dark Ages, has been updated through many reports sent in to my site by recent users over the last couple of years. There's a similar page for Algarve to Gib. Where I know of a web site or contacts, they are available through the links on the pages.

We have only experienced Sopromar in Lagos, and it was a good experience - very good craftsmen if you need them, the the staff were attentive, friendly and helpful.

We are 20 tons and draw 2m.

A little north of where your planning but Povoa de Varzim. Very cheap, friendly staff, full services and you can stay on board. Small live aboard community.Nice little town. Near Porto airport and easily reached by the excellent tram.

Mooring for 1 month was 50 euros! Lift and wash and relaunch 75 euros!

Thanks all for your help and information, much appreciated

Steve yes and thanks for the info.

Firefly Pavoa was a great place, and indeed VERY cheap and friendly, but gets battered in winter or i would indeed have stayed there, I cant do North, Ive taken North off the compass for now , thanks

Hi Ribrage,

do you have the name of the boat yard or a name of a person or maybe a telephone number? I am interested in this possibility, as I am moving along there next month and need to take my boat out of the water.

Cheers, Jan Prahm, www.seabelow.de

Hi Jan

from the pilot book - +351 233 402918 is the number for the marina , which were very accommodating when we were there last year, taking us to the supermarket in a mini bus and also for diesel and all very sensibly priced, the town is a bit run down , the yard is a gravel base so will get messy in the rain, but they are the most welcoming and helpful people in general the Portugese, I'm currently property hunting there if thats a measure as to how much we liked it
