Hi,

I am considering basing the boat in Holland for the next 6-12 months or so. Looking at Breskens, Vlissingen, Middleburg etc. I will be back and forwards to the boat for various lengths of stay, so would ideally like somewhere that is:

1, Accessible for the wider Europe by air/rail.
2, permits living aboard for periods of time.
3, Is safe to leave
4, Has reasonable facilities
5, Is located within walking distance of a town/life

My question is, does anyone have experience of this area, what your thoughts are on a suitable base/marina or quay and any recommendations you have would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Ijmuiden. Have a look at it.

But it's a bit of a trek into a not very attractive town.

How about one of the IJsselmeer/Markermeer towns - Hoorn, Enhuizen, Muiden, Lemmer, Edam, etc (loads of options) all within an hour on public transport from Schipol? Lovely sailing right from the harbours, relatively cheap compared to the UK, nice interesting historic towns. I don't know about liveaboard, but why not wander around them and ask?

The coastal ports tend to be more expensive and more full than inland ones. Assuming you will be landing at Schiphol, ports within easy rail travel might be ijmuiden, Scheveningen, Middelburg, Vlissingen. Inland many places are remarkably cheap, e.g. Dordrecht, and also on mainline railway. Sailing inland is very rewarding, whereas the coast tends to be rather samey and gets rough in fresh winds.

Many boats are kept onshore during the winter months so finding a place afloat during winter should be quite easy. Beware of a fresh water berth due to ice. I kept my boat at Wolphartsdyke on the Versemeer for three winters. The cost was equivalent to two nights in an Italian marina in August. Transport in Holland is very good. Look for a place with a train station. I would spend a little time cruising inland looking for a suitable berth, there are hundreds of small boat harbours. If you will be spending time living on the boat make sure there are toilets and showers available, the Dutch take a dim view on pumping out (it's illegal!).

During the summer months I kept the boat at several harbours? I used Marinas and town quays. Security was excellent.

Six haven just behind Central station Amsterdam ticks all 5 of your requests easy to get to by air, ferry/train or car. and all the IJsselmeer to play on and explore the NE inland canals around Hgemer Mar to Lemmer fab done it for 10 years 80s to 90s.

I think that would be too busy in the summer, much better just along in the canal Aeolus Club, SM right nxt door as well

Thanks everybody, seems a lot of choice. I guess the best bet is to do a recce with so much to go at.

Many thanks

I agree with you, but I thought he wanted tidal on the coast, if I was going inland, it would be Hoorn, great town and harbour and it has direct train line to Schiphol, or maybe change at sloterdijk.

Six haven as winterspot, from 1 of november to end of mars.
Then you move to the lakes Markermeer or Ijsselmeer in the summer time.
