Where to Leave a 54' SY in the Solent Area for a Month?

I appreciate you’re sorted, but Town Quay in Southampton is perfect for groceries and city life…. I’ve stumbled back from Pop World a few times…

It does however lack any shore side services, but that’s reflected in the price. For 16m you’d be looking at £79 per meter, per month.
Soton Town Quay is actually where we first alighted after our North Sea Crossing.

£79/m is only for an annual contract. They don't do monthly contracts. For anything less than an annual contract, you pay the nightly rate and you get every 7th night free. It works out to £2200 a month or something, so almost double the cost of Shamrock Quay.

I've spent time over the years there and I like it. The location is lovely, and fantastic getting to and from the railway station or Red Jet.

Did you think of Chichester Harbour? There's a mid-channel visitors pontoon near Itchenor that I would guess would cost a lot less than £1200 per month. Contact the Conservancy office to ask

Thanks for the tip!

But I'm already settled in at Shamrock Quay and have already made the painful payment for two months ahead.

I'm fairly happy here -- this is a friendly and very well run marina, with very serious boatyard capabilities, including a giant 75 tonne Wise travel lift. There is a Force4 right on site, Golden Arrow is next door, and every manner of marine service. Great place for working on the boat.

The only problem is that it's a very remote location if you don't have a car. Not even a grocery store, no restaurants of any kind except the Yellow Welly for lunch, and only one pub. An endless walk through the entire industrial part of Soton to get to the town part, no bus service anywhere near. I'm using Ubers at £10 a pop to get into town. I tried a bicycle, but Soton does not have bike paths at all, or even bike lanes! You're taking your life in your hands cycling to the centre from here; and car drivers are amazed and outraged to see you on the road! So I might end up doing some kind of long term car rental, but after the cost of that, I might as well have paid to be in Cowes.

There's a Spar just 20mins walk from Shamrock Quay towards the Itchen bridge, or Yau Brothers Chinese Supermarket round the corner in the other direction. Unity Brewery tap house is also just a short stagger away if you fancy a crafty pint

Don't be frightened by the Northam Estate. I have been walking and cycling through it at all times of day and night for years with out any bother. The bus stop for the service into town is through the estate by the petrol station and there is a really well stocked corner shop in the parade. You cant miss it as it is the only one that is an actual shop and not a mural.

Now the Bistro has closed you are going to have venture out. There are plenty of safe cycling routes to Oxford Street, the city centre and Ocean Village.

The #16 bus stop (Princes Street) is a 10 min walk from Shamrock Quay then 15-20 mins into the centre. Be careful around St Mary's at night, it is a dodgy area.

You could always try one of those electric scooters I see all the students using.

Adding in case anyone in future finds this but Haslar (and all Boatfolk) have various rates and automatically bump you to the cheapest. If you pay weekly but stay two months you get the monthly rate, but you’d never pay more than the annual rate (so I was told!).
Good transport links too, which is always nice.
No longer a berth holder but have had nothing but good service from Boatfolk across the country, although Bangor (NI) need to sort out those group showers!

£1200 a month would break my heart to be in a city.( I love cities for sailing out from and returning to, all those music pubs and energy)
But £ 1200.. That is a new top end folding bicycle- each and every month!

Needs must I guess and budgets and priorities and convenience et al.

But next time around for the general thread , it might be worth looking up the Itchen towards Northam Bridge and accepting half tide ( mud) offerings, folks? Kemps eg .

Giving someone £35/month for a year and ending up with nothing isn’t buying a bike 😉
Why not buy a new one for £1,449 and see how much it's worth after 12 months? If you can sell it for more than £1,029 then you're quids in. There are plenty of subscriptions I'm signed up to that have nothing tangible to show after a year.

There's a nice little Mexican place next to Brown's pub if you like that kind of thing too
This was a hot tip, for which I thank you!

I had dinner there last night, and it was delicious!

I was actually born in Texas, so I have high standards what concerns Mexican food. This was some of the best I've ever had in this hemisphere. The proprietor is Turkish, I believe, so I have no idea where he acquired the knowledge, but he did.

Cheers.

Some variants not suggest by anyone: Ocean Quay, just downstream from Shamrock Quay. Half the price of Shamrock Quay. They tried hard to find a place for me, and they had the depth, but no spot wide enough. Very friendly people there.

Judging by my walk round the Southern half of the marina they have something between 10 and 20 percent of thier spaces without a permanent berth holder. These being in the 10 to 11 meter range.

Do they use them on the roads or pavement?

I could be wrong but I thought there was some news about them being illegal to use somewhere (on pavements? Or even roads? I don’t know).

I'm 16.4m and 2.3 deep, so there are only a couple spaces where I would fit there. The nice people who run it tried hard to find something for me, but couldn't.
