Where to go?

We are going to Cambridge for a day out, can anyone suggest a good place to walk and look at boats. I don't want to waste time driving around, when I could be looking at boats.

Regards

Well Cambridge is pretty crap for boat watching unless you really like punts and rowers, there's loads of them. Trouble is it's the end of the navigable river so not many boats go there much and it's a really crap run into the city by boat with loads of beat up old houseboats that look as if they'd sink if not tied to the bank. And the only moorings are in a not particularly nice part of the City and there's been a bit of trouble with boats being broken into and generally unpleasant stuff, so most visitors sort of go and leave pretty quickly. There's no marinas there.

Probably best to go to Ely, they've really made the most of their waterfront, its called Quai D' Orsey, bit tacky name but a nice walk along the river and a couple of good pubs and art galleries and antique shops and of course the Cathedral's worth a visit too. There's a marina on the opposite bank, Lovey's and you can have a stroll round during normal business hours as long as you pretend you're either thinking of buying a boat or moving yours there. About 20 mins or so by car from Cambridge or train'll get you there too..

Other choices are St Ives, that's quite pretty to stroll round and a reasonable waterfront and can be good fun watching the boats negotiate the very low arched bridge, especially good to watch on a windy day. Bound to see someone hit it (and no I haven't yet). They've got the smallest prison or chapel in the country actually on the bridge. I can never rememeber which it is, church or prison, never been in it so not sure.

Huntingdon's not bad, St Neots is OK too, but for my money I'd go to Ely, think it's the best of the lot.

Then again what sort of boats are you anticipating seeing? The Ouse and Cam are pretty small rivers with narrow locks (max 10'6" beam) so you're not going to see any big boats. Sort of 30 ft is about it for Motorboats, no sailing boats, well a few dinghy's but nothing substantial 'cos of the low bridges, but quite a few narrow boats 'cos they can get through form the canal network.

Hope you have a good day out, when are you going?

If you get to Huntingdon, we moor in Hartfrod Marina and you're welcome to an afternoon trip up or down river through a couple of locks with us if you fancy it. Ours is the Mirage with the MBY burgee on it. PM me if interested.

Am I right that you're the man that started the infamous River Wissey thread?

So did you end up buying a place on the Wissey then? And is it like we all said? Do tell all or tcm and Haydn will start all over again.

Let's give him a break eh?

Will I ever live down that enquiry? I doubt it. Coliholic-I appreciate you standing up for me and asking bullies to lay off. Having an inferiority complex, I feel vulnerable. I had to give up playing rugby because I thought the scrums were talking about me.

Did we move to that part of the world? No, the properties sold very quickly.

Reason for going to Cambridge area? Having just spent our first year afloat on the Broads, thought we might have a look at somewhere different. I did think about Ely, and that is indeed the place that we will visit.

We are very happy in Brundall, but you never know what the future has instore. Will we fancy a change of area?

So Mole, Toad and Coliholic Pike, and all the other animals of the river bank. All huddled together. To decide what Norman should do. Should he go to Ely? Even though he's very happy in Brundel. Decisions, decision. Pike swam of to reconoiter the Ely type place and said he would report back with his findings.

No one can force me to come here-----------

Re: off to Ely

Norman Wyatt hadn't chosen his name. His father had chosen it for him. Of course. But why Norman? No, Norman Whyatt, was alway Norman's response. Ok then, but why why-AT? And why was Norman Whyatt always asking why should he live at this place or that? Normally, Norman whyatt's why? questions elicited no response at all. But when, against the norm, norman whyatt, not normally a "Why?" type asked "why Ely?" , the norms were cast aside.

Re: sorry!

hum, yes sorry bout that. Not very personal though, I made it up entirely. Yet another failed attempt at humour. Now mr wyatt has gone and it's my fault. No more postings asking about riverside property in east anglia. No more queries about days out in cambridge, or er well that covers it actually. Anyway, sorry.
