Really keen to get hold of one of those old style copper kettles with the holes around the bottom edge but it seems they are no longer available. There's a few on eBay but there's no guarantee those ones are lined on the inside and I believe there's a toxicity risk if it's just copper.

Anyone know where there is one sitting on a chandlers shelves?

We have one of these type of kettles, dont know where we got it, SWMBO found it.

It boils water fine, not sure if it is any faster than any other kettle, but.....

The fins and coil on the bottom are made of copper to help heat transfer and these oxidise slightly over the flames producing a black oxide scale that flakes off leaving flakes all over the cooker and a trail to the sink every time you fill the kettle. The flakes are not easy to wipe up and whilst to most would not be a problem it irks me!

Any one noticed likewise or have I just got a dodgy kettle?

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I keep finding it and then probing reveals no stock. I had come to the same conclusion as you about the Mega Store offering. They don't stock _anything_ really do they.

Sounds annoying, bummer.

Black Oxide, if that is what it is

Yes - we have same problem with a modern version quick boil gas kettle we got from Force 4. We got a it as a replacement for an old QB Simplex one inherited with the boat, as that was dropping lots of gubbins all ove rthe cooker. New one fine for about 3 months, then started doing exactly the same. I think it must be a problem with the Quick Boil design feature as Status implies. Works fine tho and prefer having the whistle on the new one- stops me coming into saloon like a sauna, having got carried away on a job and forgotten kettle was on the 'ob:)

I got my quick boil kettle in Robert Dyas a few years ago, I had a quick look online, but couldnt see them there anymore, but it might be worth dropping in to check if your passing

I have one of these kettles for a couple years used at home now as we have a Wallas cooker on Naida and it doesn't work well on a hob.
I tested the time it took to boil one pint against another "normal kettle" at home on a calor cooker and it was the same! Not sure if it is worth paying the extra money for, and they are not terribly strongly made either. Get a decent quality enamel or stainless kettle, it will last for ever.

In preparation for a lengthy ocean passage where I wanted to use as little gas as possible, I did a test comparing a 'quick boil' kettle with my standard one.
Same burner, same amount of water etc.

Not the slightest difference
