My sister and nephew are visitng from Spain and I've promised them a trip on the boat tomorrow. The boy is very keen on fishing and I'd like to try and do some - trouble is, I know damn all about fishing, where to do it, how to do it etc. We have a small rod and some mackerel lines with spinners. And then, if we did catch something, I'm not sure I'sw know what to do with it.

Can anyone give me some tips. If there's an experienced fisherman out there who would like to come along for the day, please pm me with a phone number and we'll have a chat.

Thinking of doing something similar myself tomorrow. A paravane (a handline and mackerel spinners) that I ordered off ebay failed to arrive in time for our summer trip. Now it's here want to give it a go.
Not having done any before I found this site
I only want to catch a few mackerel to bbq and the site suggest the strong tidal area around the forts are good, but loads of other info for other fish.
I'm sure there'll be some more expert fishermen along soon, but good luck, I'll keep an eye out for you.

Anywhere where there is likely to be a large concentration of other boats. Middle of the Hurst narrows, the looe channel and smack in the middle of the entrance to Chichester harbour seem to be prime spots /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ah thanks. I didn't know that. I suppose the fish are attracted to the movement of the boats, huh?

Try just off the Hayling Island lifeboat station in Chichester Harbour - I'll probably be there in our Oyster 16 Sunday.

Wave if you see me

Thought the /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif would give it away (though in truth, I know lots of folks do fish in the hurst narrows and Chi entrance with great results).

Heres a cast iron cert way of getting mackerel.

a) Take boat to Sparkes in the evening about 1/2 hour before dusk.

b) Moor up. Remove a bucket + lanyard from the boat.

c) Walk to the eastern end of the beach just west of the Chi Harbour entrance.

d) Wait for dusk

e) Wade into water about 3 feet and throw bucket on lanyard into the shoaling mackerel.

f) Recover bucket quickly and return to boat.

Ahhhhh !!! Oh joy..... more obstacles to avoid in the Chichester entrance channel ! bah humbug !!!

FYI Chichester harbour Bylaw extract :
The master of a vessel navigating the harbour shall navigate the vessel with care and caution and in such a manner as shall not cause annoyance to the occupants of any other vessel or cause damage or danger to any other vessel or to any moorings or other property.

Fishing in the middle of the entrance to Chichester on a weekend would almost certainly consititute huge annoyance to other vessels !.

There are plenty of excellent spots to fish, check your charts and look at the numerous wrecks around the Solent. In addition between the Looe and Brackelsham Bay is good and anywhere between Chi entrance and the Nab will produce results without plonking yourself and your visitors at potential risk in the middle of any channel to cause annoyance and aggravation for all. PS Get some feather traces they will guarrantee results.

Thanks. So don't need to worry about bait then? Just use feathers or spinners?

So, when I've found a likely fishing ground, should I cast the lines and:

(a) drift with the wind/tide (obviously if safe);

(b) anchor;

(c) keep moving slowly (what speed?).

Had my first successful fishing experiance, only tip I can give is to look for area's with lots of seaguls.. worked eventually for me!!

Oh and they taste great /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well, this afternoon while burbling around in Osborne Bay, I noticed the fishfinder going mad with blips. Start from the bay with the House clearly in view and head due North untill you notice the bottom dropping away on the fishfinder/sounder. Stop. Drop lines over the side, you might catch summat there. They were there this pm, who knows, they might be there again tomorrow. Good luck.

I have just walked down the pontoon and a bl@@dy big fish jumped out the water and landed at my feet.

14 inch long.

I picked it up and lobbed it back in, we are having a BBQ tomorrow too
Arnt I a dummy /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
