Hi every one.
I am at Cartagena at the moment in the Costa Blanca and I am wondering where to winter my boat. I will be taking it out mid October for six months and want it out of the water. I need to be able to work on it myself and sleep on board some of the time. We are heading east wards fairly slowly, has any one a suggestion for my winter stop. Preferably easy distance to an airport. I am looking for low cost if possible, any suggestions would be great.
Many thanks

Depends how quickly you are travelling and what sort of work you want to do. Many Spanish yards are difficult over sleeping aboard - Denia, Alicante, Palma for example.

Sardinia likely to be expensive.

I would be inclined to get to Malta, take a berth in Msida Creek (after the Middle Sea Race) and lift out on Manoel Island when you are ready. Last time I was there there were quite a few doing just that.

Help available if necessary, weather usually decent until mid Jan, half a dozen chandleries, English speaking, low cost flights out.

Martigues, near marseille, was good fof me. Under 1000 euros for 10 months for 8.6 metre yacht. No pilfering. You can work and sleep on board, but b cold in winter. Ibis hotel 50 metres from office when you get fed up with roughing it. Convenient supermarket very close. Bus to marseille with trains, easyjet, ryanair and world airlines.

You might like to have a look at Sant Carles MDL Marina. It is in the direction you are travelling, handy for cruising the Baleares, is well run, friendly and does a 6 month deal ashore inclusive water, electricity, wifi and you can work and stay on your boat.

If the location suits you, I too would give a hearty recommendation for Sant Carles. We only hauled there for a month (Aug 2012) but were very impressed with the place, other perhaps than 'easy' airport access - there are plenty of cheap flights to be had via Barcelona (the Ryanair airport's about halfway between Barca and Sant C) but it's either an expensive taxi ride or a combination of long walks/bus/train to get there on a tighter budget.

Thomas the Yard Manager is a star, 'Vidal' in the town seemed able to fix anything we took to him and we didn't find the mossies anything like as bad as we'd feared/been warned of; I think they may be a bigger problem in the marina proper than in the yard.

our boat is lying in Marine del sole, in Cagliari Sardinia . If you do a search you will get some colour on the place. It's not expensive in my opinion, we were quoted eur 1200 or so for the winter and similar for summer inc haul out (11 meter) . The yard can do basic jobs. The marina is pretty basic and not highest standard but you get what you pay for (next door is twice the price and not that much better). Itd has a distinct Italian way of doing things (e.g. my repair took 7 days for a job that could've been done in a day but I was in no rush so no issue for me). Cagliari has easyjet , and is a great town with loads of nice restaurants - brilliant wines and food for ok prices if you're into food. Marina is only a 15-20 minute walk or 10 minute bus ride away (or EUR 5 cab), airport EUR 20 in a taxi.

If you're prepared to go as far as Sardinia, I'd recommend Nautica Pinna in Bosa as best value for wintering ashore. You can stay aboard and work on your own boat. Bosa is a lovely town, but quite dead in winter. Direct bus to Alghero airport from bus stop 10 mins from yard. Alghero has year-round Ryanair.

We left Razzmatazz there last winter, and will probably do so again this winter.

We've also wintered in Sant Carles. Excellent service, but the work we had done was pricey.

We were in Marine del sole in June 2013. Whilst the above report is correct, you need to know that there are downsides. The main "walkway" consists of planks sort of nailed down, the shower and loos are in a tent, and hardly used. The net result is that the mooring lines are black when they come up, as everyone is using their own facilities on board. The yard office is a real challenge to your sense of smell. Basically the whole place is run my men without a single woman in sight. Great value, friendly etc... but slightly chaotic.

We're taking a boat over later this year and after looking at loads of marinas all up the Spanish coast we're going to take it to Aguadulce just round the corner from Almeria town. As far as prices go it's not as bad as the majority and it can be kept out of the water all winter and you can work on it yourself. We spoke to Jessica there in the office and you can have craned in and out whenever you want

Almerimar closest airport Almeria.
I was there 3 years ago, then you could do DIY and sleep in the boat on the hard.
A lot of people that use to lay up i Aguadulce now do it in Almerimar,so a heard.

Hard-standing space is at a premium in the Med - unlike the UK. Most places only allow 2 weeks out in any 12 months as far as permanent berth-holders are concerned. After that they want payment for extra time ashore.
Places that I know are the exceptions to that rule are:-
Any of the 3 Preveza boatyards, le Castella, Gela, Navy Service (Port St Louis), Gelves (Sevilla).
