Where to find a berth to leave a yacht in the Canaries mid-November?

Plans are afoot to sail down to the Canaries then leave the boat and fly home mid-November, returning in the New Year.

Unfortunately many marinas are likely to be chockablock with ARC boats in November. Does anyone have any advice as to which marinas would be most likely to have space? Graciosa perhaps? (Suspect Las Palmas is out of the question!)

Plan 'B' would be to leave the boat in the Algarve and then sail down the Morroccan coast to the Canaries sometime in January - is that a sensible plan if we wait for a weather window ?

Boat is 30ft.

I've used Las Galletas before in south of Tenerife and La Gomera. Las Galletas handy for the airport though both bit far south if you want to cruise the islands a bit without beating back up. The new marina in Lazerote maybe worth a look? Seems pretty cheap if they have space, google earth pic is from April last year & looks like plenty space left. Might even see you down that neck of the woods :cool:
Certainly do-able in Jan but you might get stuck for a while waiting for the weather.
Don't you need to let someone know beforehand these days just to anchor in Graciosa?

Its really only Las Palmas that gets crowded at that time.

Its a good time of year to come down all the way, why leave the boat in the Algarve when its only another 5 or 6 days here? I will say though that if you did choose that option, January is still mostly good.

Lets say you cracked on anyway.

Graciosa is great, you will need to book. Its a PITA website and you may not get a response. lots of faffing to get to airport. Ferry and bus. Takes a while.

Lanza. Easy peasy in Arrecife Marina, Calero and Rubicon. Buses very cheap plus a small ammount of walking to airport.

Fuertaventura. One choice. Gran Tarajal. Cheap but remote from airport. Great spot though.

GC. You will probably get in Puerto Rico and Puerto Mogan. I was in the last one Nov last year but the boats are packed together on lazy lines.

You can carry on but as pointed out its a beat back up to the other islands later. Thats really why most people in your position drop the boat of in Lanza, go home then on return continue cruising downhill.

For the last 18 months cruising round the eastern islands Ive been using the Imray published Cruising Guide to the Canary Islands. Its generally very good.

We were in Gomera a couple of years ago in late Nov and there was space with plenty of boats coming and going.

(Though I think that the Capn post above probably has the most reliable current info. )

www,marinalagomera.es Dont know if you have been there before but the Marina Staff are great and you are right next to the ferry terminal. Fast ferry then cab to Tenerife south airport.

That was where Kathy and I were based on Fairwinds for four months after we cancelled our transat in 2006/2007, and Catherine and I were out there again last year on an AirBnB boat in the marina.

. . . and i know all about the upwind aspect of getting back to Lanza, we went from San Sebastian to GC, Fuerta, Lanza, Graciosa last time to get an angle back to Madeira. This time though Avy-J is staying based in the Canaries . . . though not ruling out a trip to Madeira if we feel up to it.

Ah, I thought Id remembered you have been there before! Its one of my favourites too. Unfortunately by the nature of current (!) work, I kinda get limited in time by Gran Canaria in order to get back when sailing round here.

The uphill part as you know can be broken down into shorter hops, just needs time, I suppose.

Madeira remains for me a 'got to do it soon' destination. Only a couple of days, look forward to it.
 
Tazacorte on La Palma is a very good place as well. Lovely island although we were there before the recent wildfires. Big discount if you're a CA member, as there is in Quinto do Lorde in Madeira btw).
