Where to eat in Cherbourg

We're doing our competent crew and day skipper starting from Cherbourg and going around the CIs next week. We've got an evening to kill in Cherbourg and wondered if anyone could recommend somewhere to eat for about €25 a head.

Lots to choose from, all situated around the Avant - Port area just South of the marina. (opposite the swing bridge)

Cafe de paris is great, or Le vauban or le cotentin all have a good range on the menu and lots of fresh fish.

Have a great time sailing and eating !

It wasn't the cheapest, and not the most adventurous be I have a couple of excellent meals in the yacht club resturant. starter -goats cheese and jambon salad followed with a serloin steak.

.. not being flippant, but, eat where the French are eating and avoid those full of (english) tourists. works for us ...

Would agree Cafe De Paris is good, choose the set menu though otherwise it can get a bit expensive. I am looking at my VISA bill here from June and a set menu dinner with wine cost me £22.02 not Euros £s.

The following night we ate at 'Pizza Caligny' up the road from CDP near the traffic lights, didnt look much from the 'Rue', we had pizza and it was to die for! The bill, inc a couple of beers £15.32

Either way try and get the same deal in Cowes!!!!

In June I ate in a place called La Regence, just adjacent to the commercial dock (42-44 Quai de Caligny). Had a 3 course set menu of mussels, duck and dessert for €16. Excellent food for an excellent price.

Reason I chose it amongs all the others there - everyone eating was speaking french.

Heartily agree about Cafe de Paris, also very accomodating, opened up the whole upstairs for a large party of us early this year, excellent food and service. Paul

Ciboulette is good and cheaper, L'Aigue Marine is excellent, Regence, Cafe de Paris, Vauban, Cotentin, Grand Gousier is superb but pricier.

There are also pizza places, chinese or even McDonalds, not what we go to France for, but whatever trips your trigger......

You will need to book if you don't want to be wandering from one to another in hope, or go very early.

Le Faitout do a wonderful 19 euro menu which is four courses. Very traditional French restaurant if that's what you want.

Grand Gousier

I'll second that, super place to eat, didn't find it that much more expensive than other places, but it certainly was a cut above. A bit of a walk, but well worth it.

We didn't have one of the menus and chose from the Carte every time we were there but it was excellent. La Ciboulette is very close to Grand Gousier and also worth a try, the food is superb and very reasonable, not quite as up market. L'Aigue Marine is our current pick, newish maybe 18 months old but very friendly and very good. La Regence we have used often but the menu hasn't changed, Cafe De Paris is good but last visit were a bit mean with the portions, Vauban is nearly always either full or closed but if you do get in is good if pricey. L'Ancre D'Or near the Quai Caligny is dreadful which explained why it was empty and all the others full!

Short answer though is they are all good, especially if you like seafood like us!

I have often thought you are a bit crabby from time to time, Robin, but can't say I find you that apertising!! Haven't met SWMBO yet, of course!! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Seriously though, I have volunteered to organise food for the next Scuttlebutt trip, currently awaiting the date to be set. I organised Le Tir Bouchon last year which worked well, but is limited in the number they can seat. Grand Gousier fitted 48 Moody Owners in the back room for a sit down meal, which might not be enough for Scuttlebutters. Also, I would rather something less formal where we don't have to commit to a specific number, because it was a nightmare last year, not knowing who was actually going to arrive.

You are obviously more familiar with the places than me - do you know any restaurants where we might be able to arrange an informal buffet type of event, rather than a set menu??

All (polite) suggestions gratefully received.

Gosh that's a tall order Big Nick /forums/images/icons/smile.gif. Grand Gousier did well if they managed 48 grumpy, sorry Moody owners, I'm not sure any of the others could beat that though:-
